Spainish Blood

When Katharine of Aragon (or Infanta Catalina of Aragon and Castile as I believe she was known then) came to England to marry Prince Arthur the people took to her almost instantly. Yet when Queen Mary I wanted to marry Charles V's son Prince Phillip everyone (despite the fact that most of them were Catholic's) in England hated him. He was Catholic so what was their problem??? After all Katharine of Aragon the Queen's own mother was Spainish and Catholic and they LOVED her so why did they object so strongly to Phillip???

She was looking for someone like Charles V but got Philip instead. But I believe the people wanted to stay away from foreigners, make England it's own. Look at Elizabeth and the Duc d'Anjou, Elizabeth saw France as her ally but the people wanted nothing to do Francois and his country. Also, Katharine was Catholic like the rest of England had been, not so much by the time Philip came around...same thing happened with Liz and Francois too, he was Catholic and Cat d'Medici son. A new mood of nationalism had sprung up between the arrival of KoA and the much later arrival of Philip. The English feared that thier country would become a satellite state for Spain, and lose its` sovereignty. Mary was, after all going to make Philip King of England, whereas Katherine of Aragon was simply a Queen Consort (an altogether different kettle of fish).

Phillip may have been King of England, but he seemed to play more the role of the consort. Mary didn't allow him free reign over HER kingdom, and that was what ultimately provoked him to leave and return to Spain on the several and long occasions that he did!

In America we refer to it as "times have changed". Katherine came to England like 50years before Philip came on the scene in England. Religion and fear of foreign control had taken hold. And like LNor said it wasnt just with Spain. Elizabeth wanted to marry a French guy but being foreign and Catholic was a problem in that situaiton as well.
