Carolly Erickson's Biography?
Oct 18 2009, 4:22 PM EDT | Post edited: Oct 18 2009, 4:22 PM EDT
Chances are, i've gotten her name wrong, but i think she's credited, alongside of Linda Porter, as being one of the few authors to favourably approach Mary Tudor. I was wondering if there was anyone who has read her biography on the tragic Queen, and would recommend it, as there doesn't appear to be a lot of information, or ratings, available on the Tudor Books section here? I haven't read her book on Mary Tudor but I've read two of her other books on Marie Antoinette and Tatiania Romanov and they were nice stories and well written but very very fictional. Do you find this valuable?

They weren't intended as biographies, were they? Because her book on Mary Tudor is a biography?

No I don't thing they were they. At least I hope they weren't. Like the Romanov one ended with Tatiania escaping and not dying with the rest of her family which we all know didn't happen. But she said that at the end (in the Author's note) that it wasn't true Do you find this valuable?

Erickson in 'Bloody Mary" strives for a more balanced portrait of Mary I than usual for that time, and Erickson does cite contemporary sources, It is a popular biography. When she mentions Anne Boleyn, she even presents the views of those who were not inimical to Henry's second Queen while being understanding of Mary's position Erickson also seems to avoid for the most part, apocryphal anecdotes and injecting imaginary scenes as Weir does.

Great, thanks AD, i'll probably chance it then! Thought i'd ask considering i ended up buying Joanna Denny's biography on Anne Boleyn, only to come here and read some of the reviews on it.... felt a little disappointed after that as you can imagine!
