My number one is Natalie Dormer......Then Bujold,.....Number 3 is Portman..I know the movie has nothing to do with the real story but in some scenes I really liked Portman's perfomance...But Anne was dipicted as a B***ch..Of cource she was not a saint but she never treated Mary(her sister) the way it is shown in the movie..At least there isn't any proof!

I`ve just seen clips of Merle Oberon as Anne Boleyn, in a movie made back in 1930s, she too was excellent. I may have to trawl the net for a download of the whole film "Private Life of Henry VIII". Has anyone here seen it?

"I haven't seen Anne of a thousand days how does Bujold potray Anne?."She is excellent as Anne because she has the frenchness that Anne would have had, the dark eyes, fiery disposition and the fragility of her petite figure. There is more sensuality in Natalie's performance because...of course, Anne of a Thousand days was made in the 60's but its a great portrayal. The movie is cheap and you can buy it in a set with Mary, Queen of Scots. Well worth getting for a tudorphile's collection! Do you find this valuable? |

I also think Natalie Portman was good as well and I noticed that out of all the actresses to play Anne Boleyn she is the one who fits her description best. 1. Thin 2. Skinny/Slight 3. Dark hair 4. Dark eyes 5. Dark skin 6. Moles I think Natalie is one of the most beautiful women alive today, but I think in the 16th century she would be a very acquired taste. Genevieve just had some amazing monologues/rants in that movie; especially the last one in the tower that just continue to blow me away. What did everyone think of Helena Botham Carter? Bujold has a fire that is hard to match. Do you find this valuable? |

It's interesting what you say about Natalie Dormer being beautiful, because I've always thought what made her casting in terms of looks so perfect is that, in my opinion, she is not beautiful at all, but attractive, with a massive dose of charisma and sex appeal to compensate for lack of classic beauty. I adore Natalie so that's not a put down, just my honest opinion of her looks... pretty but not beautiful. As opposed to, say, the second actress who played Jane who is a textbook beauty, although I preferred the first Jane actress. As for how the wives looked in the royal Renaissance portraitss, most of them looked like barking bow-wows, especially the supposedly captivating Katherine Howard. I just don't believe these women really looked like that. It must have been the style of the painters. Do you find this valuable? |

An OT aside... why did they cast such a pretty girl to play the "plain" Anne of Cleves, and a lady who, while sweet and attractive, has far less of the Hollywood style good looks to play the beautiful Madge Shelton who in real life was beating men off with a stick? It was hard to wrap one's head around the idea that Henry could bed Madge but would rather eat knives than touch Anne C. considering the casting.

Shame on Showtime to pertray her this way. Perhaps they thought if she was too attractive, Henry wouldn`t go back to Anne. Do you find this valuable? |

As opposed to, say, the second actress who played Jane who is a textbook beauty, although I preferred the first Jane actress.I think she was referring to Natalie Portman, not Dormer. IMHO Portman is greatly overrated, both in terms of her acting ability and her looks - I've always found her very bland, and thought she was terrible in the role of Ann. Though in fairness, that had as much to do with the awful script as with her acting ability, or lack thereof. I agree with you re Dormer. One of the main objections I have to most actresses who play Ann - including Bujold who I otherwise loved - is that they're far too conventionally pretty. Ann was no great beauty, but she was very alluring and seductive, more through the force of her character and intelligence than her looks. This is lost when producers cast cover-girl beauties like Bujold, Bonham-Carter or Portman. Dormer is certainly extremely attractive, but she is also quite unconventional in looks - not an obvious beauty, just like Ann herself. Another thing I don't like about most portrayals of Ann is that the actresses are invariably quite young - usually in their mid 20s. I remember someone complaining about how 'old' Bonham-Carter was, but in fact when she played Ann she was in her mid 30s, almost exactly the age Ann was at her death. The actresses who played Ann don't seem to have been 'aged' at all, even though her story spans a decade. Do you find this valuable? |

He sabotaged his own efforts to have a son. He marries Anne, she has a daughter and a miscarriage, gets pregnant again, and instead of being super-careful to keep domestic harmony during her pregnancy so his all important son will be carried to term, he goes jousting and carries on with a chippie right under her nose. "They're going with the theory that Anne was only 29 when she was executed, as opposed to the theory that she was 35. I felt they aged Dormer a bit near the end of the second season but as you say, not enough. Do you find this valuable? |
