I would think they would have had some level of relationship. She lived with Elizabeth at Catherine Parr and Thomas Seymour's residence for some time. Thomas Seymour being Edwards uncle and Elizabeth being his sister as well as the closeness that Catherine had with her step children would all indicate some sort of relationship very possibly could have been formed. That being said from what I understand Edward Seymour was very protective of KE and I don't believe got along well with Thomas. That may have been a hinderance on some level of Jane and Edwards relationship. She was a good option as a wife for Edward though and I would think they would have been in contact in some way over the years. At least as playmates as children you would think. She had the right blood, money and station.

"I agree, they were around each other as younger children (not that either of them ever got the chance to grow out of childhood) and I imagine they had at least a friendly acquaintance. I also agree Jane Grey would have been a really good choice for a wife for Edward had he lived. Do you find this valuable? |

They also shared the same teachers - Roger Ascham and John Cheke, to name but two. It is inconceivable that they did not correspond at the very least, and of course they would have encountered each other often on state occasions or at festivals - Christmas at court and so on. It is unlikely that they were ever 'close' in the sense that we might recognise it today. Edward was kept under wraps much of his life by powerful controlling forces, and was in any case rather a cool customer, by all reports, not given greatly to outpourings of emotion.

One can imagine WHY he was such a cool customer. Not only did he have to put on an 'adult' kingly front, he was treated with such deference from such a young age that he likely thought himself too high to get close to others... not to mention the fact that he saw his father throw away a wife or two. Why bother getting close to people if they're all just going to disappear anyway?

One can only imagine how odd it must have all seemed to grow up like this - as if people were just expendable, even the odd Uncle! Do you find this valuable? |
