Why does Henry Cavill not cross himself?
Aug 10 2009, 12:53 PM EDT
There was nothing on tv this weekend so I put the tudors on as I was cleaning my apartment. I just noticed something. Henry Cavill never crosses himself in scenes that involve praying. He always makes the sign of the cross as if he is blessing someone.I don't know if this has been discussed before. It was just an observation on my part and wanted to know if other people had noticed it as well. Do you find this valuable?

Hmm, I noticed that he made 'small crosses', but I'm not religious, so I don't know the difference between crossing yourself and blessing.Maybe he isn't religious and feels uncomfortable crossing himself, so he does a minimalistic version? Do you find this valuable? |

"Hmm, I noticed that he made 'small crosses', but I'm not religious, so I don't know the difference between crossing yourself and blessing.I'm not religious either, quite athiest in fact, and i do normally refrain from crossing myself, unless of course it's a funeral and i feel the need to show respect! There is a difference between crossing one's self, and blessing, priests normally do the blessing thing as far as i know, but i can only remember this from childhood as that's how old i was the last time i went to church! I'm not catholic so I'm not certain but I thought the smaller crosses he made were in season 2 when Henry was doing away with catholic activity. I recall him in the crowd at someone's beheading and I thought he was trying to hide it.

I'm Catholic but I'm still not entirely certain. Both actions are called blessing. You bless yourself by making the sign of the cross, and the only people who bless others are priests and nuns. So far as I know, blessing oneself is a very Catholic practice so as aforementioned, perhaps it was one of the changes made to differenciate between HRC and Church of England...

Im Catholic too. I just noticed that everyone else who makes the sign of the cross, does it to themselves, but when he does it, he is always making the sign of the cross away from himself as priest do when they are giving a blessing. I don't care why he does it, but I just noticed that he seems to be the only one of the non clergy that seems to do it. Do you find this valuable? |

Is it perhaps something that was done pre-reformation?
