Mottos of Henry's Sister
Jul 26 2009, 1:31 AM EDT
Does anyone know the motto's that Mary Tudor and Margaret Tudor had while Queen of France and Queen of Scotland? I haven't been able to find it anywhere and would really like to know. Also, did Arthur have a motto while Prince of Wales because Katherine of Aragon had 'Not For My Crown' while Princess of Wales so I presume Arthur must have had one as well? If anyone knows, it would be really appreciated

Hmm, I believe Margaret Tudor's motto on her royal shield was "Rosa Sine Spina", or "Rose Without a Thorn," so says the book Scottish Cathedrals and Abbeys. Henry put this motto on his 1526-1544 currency, too, as Henry by the Grace of God A Rose WIthout a Thorn (H.D.G. ROSA SIE SPIA). Elizabeth also used in her reign, although she preferred Dieu et mon Droit or Semper Eadem.Arthur's motto, though I have never heard of specifics, would most likely have been "Ich Dien," or "I serve," since this has been the motto of the Prince of Wales since Edward, the Black Prince, adopted it in the 1300s. This is what I found for Mary: God's will sufficeth me, or La voloritè de Dieu me suffit. Or so it says in the 1970 The White Queen, so I've read, lol. I'm not really certain about that one, but that is all I have for it. :-) Do you find this valuable? |

That's fantastic! It is really appreciated. Maybe that is why Margaret was known as the Rose (The Thistle and The Rose). Thank you once again for this information. I wasn't able to find it anywhere!
