"Why didnt he just marry mary,i knowof the break of rome and catherine of aragon, and the kings great matter, only to marry anne, when she bore no son.It would have been futile to do this, as Henry needed a legitimate male heir. Any children by Mary would have been questionable in the context of not having any certainty who the father really was. Only a child born within wedlock -Henry and his chosen wife and Queen - would fit the bill for a future heir - something that parliament and the Privy Council of ministers could accept without question. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. "Why didnt he just marry mary,i knowof the break of rome and catherine of aragon, and the kings great matter, only to marry anne, when she bore no son.It has never been proven that any of Mary Boleyn's children were Henry's; he never claimed any of them, and if the son was his, he almost certainly would have claimed him just as he did Henry Fitzroy, his son by Elizabeth Blount. Yes, both of these ladies proved capable of bearing sons; unfortunately both of these women had a 'reputation' for being 'good old girls' about the court, up for a roll in the hay, with no interest in causing problems; both had had other lovers besides Henry. Mary Boleyn had a reputation during her time in the French court, and may have been one of the mistresses of Francois I. They were the kind of women Henry sought out for pleasure (especially when his wife was pregnant), but not the type of women he would ever have considered marrying. The reason he married Anne was that he conceived a passion for her and she made it clear she was not like her sister; he would have to marry her if he wanted to bed her. He may have been encouraged by her sister Mary's fertility; in addtion to his passion for Anne, and that increased her desirability. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Yes, the idea that Mary Boleyn gave birth to one or more of Henry's children has come popular since Gregory's completely fictional account of The Other Boleyn Girl came out. It has no grounds in reality. If one wished to stretch history, they could perhaps make an argument for Mary's daughter being Henry's, but the timeline is way too far off for her son to be Henry's.

It seems we must constantly be correcting Philippa's fictional accounts. I'm beginning to wish she chose some other genre besides "historical" fiction.
