"That not true all types of people are alcoholics. ITs not right to say that about Irish people. Italian., Polish, Jews, Catholics, Chinese,Muslims, Greeks, Black, White, Men,Women and so on could become alcoholics. Not just Irish. Your right it could be genetic, but it could be genedtic if one of your family member is an alcoholic, like your your mom or dad in any nationality "I am not implying that only the Irish have a problem with alcohol. People with any genetic background can. However, I don't think it's wrong to say that the Irish have more alcoholism as a percentage of their population than say Jewish people have. I am not trying to insult Irish people, just saying they probably as a group have a genetic predisposition to it just as blacks tend to have more of a problem with high blood pressure or small white women are more prone to osteoporosis. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. "It puts me in mind of the tragic story of Judy Garland. When she was a child, pushed by her mother to do studio work, the Head Honcho Louis B. Mayer put her on diet pills (speed) to lose weight and give her energy, then downers to sleep. She was only 12. She battled this problem for her whole life and succumbed at a relatively young age - 60's I think. The crowds used to hang by their fingernails at her concerts because she was so loaded and waiting for her to screw up so they could say, "I was there...""Judy was only 47! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Not that i'm saying anyone is stereotyping, but how about we keep the connection between being Irish, and having a drinking problem out of this discussion, ok guys :)I'm Irish, and the most i drink is once a week, and the on off occasion when i plan to have a night in watching the Tudors with my boyfriend... I'm not claiming to have lost anyone particularly close to me, besides my Grandfather anyway, but i couldn't imagine losing my mother, and even though Jonathan lost his two years ago, it's obviously still stinging... i think it's the idea that no matter what, Mom is going to be there, you break up with your partner, you can go cry to your Mom, you have a bad day at work, you can talk to your Mom about it, not that i'm saying father's can't be capable of this either, but there's just something about your mother that you can always depend on... and Jonathan no longer has that... 2 out of 4 found this valuable. "I agree with you. Certain populations are genetically more prone to certain diseases and addictions. It's simple statistics. Alcoholism has a genetic componet. The danger comes when we generalize and imply that all or most people of a nationality or ethnicity have a problem with such and such. That causes resentment. However, agknowledging that different populations are more likely to have certain diseases or addictions is often the first step in treating and preventing the disease or addiction. Here in Alaska, where I live, health organizations are fully agknowledging that many Native Alaskans have a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. There are ongoing studies where they are trying to figure out ways to treat alcoholism in the Native population that work with the way they metablize alcohol, as well as many other factors that play a part. To me, it just seems foolish to deny our differences. I'm a freckled caucasian. Should I go around without sunscreen because I deny that I'm more likely to get skin cancer because of my skin type? I have a lot of Irish ancestry. I'm not an alcoholic, though some of my relatives have been. I wish JRM the best. I really hope he can find a way to kick his addictions and stop having scrapes with the law. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Didnt stereotype, but the media did. I was reacting to them.I am a redheaded freckled light skinned sicilian and get mistaken for irish girl. Often stereotyped as to why Im not drinking. Its society that perpetuates stereotyping. But back to the real issue~ I wish they would leave these actors alone and maybe they would have a better chance for recovery "get out of their face every second"!!!!! 0 out of 2 found this valuable. First of all I can't even believe this thread. What is all this talk about being Irish, and alcoholism?? He's a famous actor, who probably can't go to the movies without somebody reporting it. So he got drunk. Big deal. I get drunk all the time, but I am in the privacy of my home, and get in bed and sleep. I'm not a movie star. Now, if he has an ongoing problem with substance abuse, like no one has ever heard of that, I'm sure with all his money and talent he will get some help. As far as it interrupting his filming of season 4, OMG that is something to send me over the edge. I would be so upset. This is definitely a huge issue for his fans. Also, if he just lost his Mother from cancer, I doubt that has anything to do with his drinking. Losing your Mother is something we all must go through, and it's awful. No if ands or buts, it hurts forever, and the grieving never stops. But at least she was able to know he was a huge talent, a successful man, and hopefully, he will go through a normal grieving process. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't get married and have a family soon, to give him the kind of emotional support someone of his type needs. Being famous at a young age is like being a genius, it's a problem. I wish him well, and hope he can get on with his life and career.

Very sad to hear about this. This was an interesting thread. I would suppose being an actor constantly in the limelight would be very stressful yet lonely at the same time. Constantly criticizing yourself and constantly aware that people are talking about you. Lots of people use alcohol to self medicate when they are just plain stressed out or dealing with unresolved issues. Everyone needs to love themselves whether they are famous or not famous. I think he needs to slow down and enjoy life. It wouldn't be suprising to me either if he gets married and has a family soon. Also agree that actors/actresses/singers are more prone to this. Probably partially because they tend to be more sensitive than the average person. I wish him much love and peace and future happiness.
