"I totally agree with you she is wrong for the part. They should have picked a younger actress. The producers produced a wonderful series in seasons 1 and 2 but season 3 they made alot of mistakes and I think season 4 will be a dud, AND I very dissappointed ."
It's not as if she's never done a period drama before, she was in the Patriot, so she knows what she's getting herself into! As for being too old, Joely certainly doesn't look her age. To me, Jonathan was a far cry from Henry VIII when he was cast for the role, it didn't seem like he was right for the part either, but he soon proved us wrong, as did much of the cast. I'm certain Joely will do the same, and she has years of experience behind her to pull it off too!

We knew from the beginning Jrm will be Henry but their is so many actresses to pick from for Parr. This series was so fabulous at the beginning and I was so excited to watch it but now its a joke.

Exactly, Reg. And it's so typical that it's an *actress* that gets criticised for being 'too old'. How about half the cast being too young for their parts? Or the little matter of Max von Sydow being cast in the role of a character who was in his twenties at the time! It's kind of insulting and smacks of misogny. I think Joely will be great as Catherine; the role needs the gravitas of a slightly older woman, but she's also youthful-looking enough to be believable as a near-contemporary of JRM's Henry, if they age him a bit.

Well said Kate! Lets wait and see S4 before we judge Joely.

We knew JRM was going to be Henry VIII before season 1, just like we know Joely Richardson will be Catherine Parr before season 4, there were plenty of other actors that could have played Henry VIII too, but they choose Jonathan for a reason, he impressed, as will Joely!

I know, Cardinal Von Waldberg was supposedly 22 or something like that, yet Max Von Sydow is well into his 60's, yet no one has mentioned that vast age difference!

JRMISMYMAN, I share your test in men, apparently, but really disagree with your comment that Season 3 was a "joke." Interestingly, many reviewers considered it the best season. We have all had our criticisms and I, like many, wish more time had been spent on Henry and Jane's relationship but the show overall was very solid. I don't think anything will be able to replace the great drama of the Henry and Anne Bolyn story and there's nothing we can do to change that history. Your entitled to your opinion, obviously, but I thought Season 3 was very strong -- but then I'm the one who thought season 2 dragged. Do you find this valuable?

You are so right, this smacks of misogny. Unfortunately it's often women themselves who attack other women. :-(

Ugh, I know! And Nofretete is right - it's so often female on female negativity. Ageism against women is one of the acting industry's most shameful facets, and it only gets more absurd when a woman in her forties is considered old!

Let us know if you find feminism under your bed, Reg :(((

OH my goodness we all have to agree that she is perfect for the role I think Not Yes sometimes age matter, would you pick Joely to play Shirley Temple . Catherine Parr was in her thirties when she married Henry, not in her forties like Joily is.Frog had it right we are entitled to our own opinion. 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

Hirst has written most of these characters as being ten years younger than what they were in history!

I'm not sure I agree with the issue some people have with J Richardson's age. She does not look her age at all. So does it matter what her ID card states? Richardson is very good in period dramas, she was a great Marie Antoinette in the Affair of the Necklace. As for other character's ages...and general looks, the series has not been very good at sticking with historical exactitude. It's been artistic licence all along, with people's looks, ages, and many other things. The tudors is a good drama....but not a good History lesson. We're still watching, aren't we? Personnaly I can't stop, even if I have been known to rant at the TV when the script di not stick to historical facts ;-) speak soon :-) Do you find this valuable?

I honestly don't understand how people can consider Joely too old, but not think JRM is too young, baffling?
