Well this is just my opinion but, I think a great deal because even after they seemed to have the problem under control after it flared in Episode 6 you still see him walking around with a cane and an apparent limp even in Episode 8!!!

"It is well we don't yet have smell-o-vision with our TV. It was, in reality, by all reports an abominable stench. The grief would have been as much for those around him. It would have done little for his temper, either. A difficult end to his life. SR Do you find this valuable? |

History dictates that it will give him grief until the day he dies. He actually becomes sick and bedridden because of the infection from the ulcer.
