If you woke up in Tudor England...
Jun 7 2009, 5:54 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 7 2009, 5:54 PM EDT
This is a silly question, but if you woke up the next morning in Tudor England, what is the one modern convenience that you would miss the most? My vote goes to a nice, hot, shower. I could deal without my cell phone and computer, but I'm too much of a neat freak to tolerate bad hygiene... Do you find this valuable?

I'm wondering why they didn't think of the concept of a "shower"? Other than I guess they didn't believe in bathing as much as we in modern times; but, wouldn't it be a simple matter of having a servant pour a bucket of heated water over you as you washed? If you woke up in Tudor England, you could start the fad! But then you might be burned as a heretic for such "unusual" behavior? ha.

I would miss indoor plumbing as a whole.

Wait a minute, I guess their indoor plumbing WAS a hole.

What I would miss.... I guess the ability to speak my mind, whenever, wherever, however I want. I would miss what we women have fought for... The Pill.... Tampons.... Like Reggie said, medical treatment/ medicine.... I could go on, but you get it! Do you find this valuable?

Hot Coffee, probably. Barley water, mead and Tudor beer don't do it for me.

Modern medicine. I would have already been dead from was termed "dropsy" in those days.

Hmmm....what else? Maybe refrigeration? We can have most food throughout the year. In the 16th century, even those who might have been considered fairly wealthy could often go part of the year without a lot of available food.

ummm, actually, the bathing thing wouldn't be so bad with me, i think. i'd just order a bath and sit around in that nice wooden tub for HOURS. but they didn't have knickers, and i think i'd feel pretty odd without them.

I'd miss electric lights. Candlelight dinners are great & candlelight can be romantic, but I have problems reading (even with my glasses) without good lighting. I'd be squinting constantly! Do you find this valuable?
