Bank Holidays?
Jun 1 2009, 3:07 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 1 2009, 3:07 PM EDT
Is this true, or did the series just inject this into Season 2, did Cromwell really try to ban Bank Holidays? Do you find this valuable?

Well, today is a bank holiday in the U.K, as it suggests, the banks are closed, but so are many other facilities, schools for example!

Public holidays in the UK and Ireland. These used to be on Saint's days and religious holidays so im guessing Cromwell was saying after breaking with the Catholic Church, England didnt need to observe these days.

Well, there's Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday. I think those are the religious ones. Then there's New Years Day, Early May Bank Holiday (May Day), Spring Bank Holiday and Summer Bank Holiday. So that's 8. That's for England and Wales, don't know about Scotland or NI.

There are a lot, but i think Crom's intention was to get rid of bank holidays because they were bad for the economy or something like that, lol, coming from a workaholic, of course that wasn't going to be a problem! Do you find this valuable?

Interesting... We just call them national holidays, like Martin Luther King Day, Labor Day, Memorial Day,--- Just was looking on wikipedia... According to it, America does not have national holidays. "The U.S. Federal government can only recognize national holidays that pertain to its own employees; it is at the discretion of each state or local jurisdiction to determine official holiday schedules." So I guess we call them, Federal Holidays? Well.. we have 11; 10 annual and 1 quadrennial... We have Offical Holidays that are on Mondays except for New Year's Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Ok, I don't feel like typing up more about this, if you care to know more (I don't blame you if you don't) here is the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holidays_of_the_United_States

I know sooooo thoughtful ;-)) still to be fair they didn't get paid for being off work so although they were getting a rest they were also losing money - not sure what's best - being tired out or being broke!

True... Maybe Cromwell was thinking about the people? Isn't it amazing how easy it is to view Cromwell from a bad angle to a good one, and/or vice versa? =D

Well we know that TC has always been blamed for the torture of poor ol MS (knotted rope round eye - yuk) well Schofield maintains that TC was highly unlikely to have been involved in any such thing , the only evidence for this comes from a book called The Spanish Chronical written by an unknown visitor, Schofield writes that the knotted rope was a novel form of torture for Britain and he points out other inaccuracies in the text eg that Cath Howard was H8's 4th wife followed by Aof Cleves, also that in 1542 the lords devise a plot against TC (1542??) and one of the lords was the Marquis of Exeter (who had actually died in 1538) and that TC also investigated Kath Howards infidelities! Hardly an accurate account if Schofields right :-))

I didn't think he was PRESENT at Mark's torture, i remember someone saying that it was dramatical license (which there is so much of) in the show, but that he had nothing to do with it... finally, there is hope... as for Kathryn Howard, i think Crom would have investigated her infidelities as it was his enemies niece who had been inserted in front of the King, in favor of the Queen he had choosen, so that bit would make sense alright?
