Episode 8
May 18 2009, 10:15 PM EDT | Post edited: May 18 2009, 10:15 PM EDT
I saw this yesterday On Demand. . .and all I can say is "OH MY. . .!" First of all, Katherine Howard would drive me up a wall; secondly, poor POOR Thomas Cromwell. . .what Bryan & Brandon do to him is bloody awful! Just brace yourself for the last five minutes. . .they're horrific.
Absolutely CANNOT wait till next year, and feel quite cheated at only getting 8 episodes this season!

I think most people here already saw it. That Bryan and Thomas Seymour got the executioner drunk is just fiction, but it really took 3 blows to kill Cromwell, because that day they had to use the apprentice executioner, instead of his master! Do you find this valuable?

"What happened to the master?"
I'm not quite sure, I think he was indisposed or something? So they got a teen, who was so nervous he botched the whole thing!

I loved the episode...but i was very dissapointed with the last scene...the past two seasons, the last scene has included the music when cardinal wolsey kills himsel, and also a very climatic moment..(henry gettin some from anne, and when henry eats the bird pie...)..i think the last scene missed that "hhmmmphhh"..but i loved the season and wished there was more... Well, I quite liked the final scene with KH and Henry, especially her calling to him, I think it really gives the tone of the next season to come you know... KH is going to be a major part of it after all... (I really didn't like the final scene of season 1, I thought it was coming from nowhere and I was glad I could see season 2 right after that, I couldn't have ended on that nd wait for a whole year!)

Anyway, is that me or does anyone else feels the chole Reginald Pole thing has been dashed off? I'd hoped it would have been properly concluded on ep. 08, well at least I wished it had just a conclusion... I feel like it popped here but it was not pushed to an end... Maybe they'll show him again and Cardinal von Waldburg on season 4, but I doubt it and I think it's a shame... :(

Personally, I lloved the last episode, since I am Team KH after all. It was great to finally see her after such a long.....wait. Of course, my heart did go out to Cromwell, even though I totally love Mr Eye-Patch and co. I did not like what they did to the executioner in the show, hence what the did to him. He at least deserved to die a quicker death if he had to die at all. I don't think Catherine Brandon liked the idea did you?

Also, I think the scene at the end was fine, it was basically 'almost' in the same format as last year, some gets beheaded and the go to a scene of Henry afterwards. Of course, it did include Kitty but you have to think about it, the scene really sets the story for next season in a way. Wanton Girl Patrol please come forward. (Oh, don't want to forget to mention the scene when Seymour & Brandon first meet Kitty | "How old are you?" "17" "Who taught her to count" | I don't know why but that cracks me up every time).

I do want to give a little clap for two people before I end the post, first is for Hirst for at least putting in the Dowager Duchess in one scene (did anyone think that she and Bryan have a strange relationship, can someone please explain it?") maybe we will get more next season. Second round of claps goes for James Frain for his incredible portrayal of Cromwell. We may love him or loath him but his character will be sadly missed.

No........I doubt that Catherine Brandon approved and I doubt very much if she paid much favor to Charles after it had happened either.

I think Cromwell's biggest fault was to assume that the King no matter what he said approved of everything he did. It surprises me that most of the court always assumes that they have the king in their back pocket and no harm could possibly come to them. It always does though

What was the let down for me was that there were so few episodes. If there were more, more could have been explained and they wouldn't have had to shove so much into each episode, if that makes sense.

It does and I feel the same way; it's weird how 2 less eps can really effect the season (imo) . I personally think some of the characters deserved more screen time (Cromwell, Jane & AOC).
I know it was for effect but I still thought it was weird them throwing in a moment with Cromwell and his son.
It's almost like they didn't feel this season was important enough, if you get what I mean. But at the same time I guess the "scandals" are more entertaining hence why next season is 10 eps (maybe).

Eternity, I totally agree the bit with Cromwell's son was way to thrown in there -- very clearly to give us sympathy for his character. It would have been better to show that sympathy and a complex character throughout Do you find this valuable?

On the issue of the last moment of the show I think it's really interesting how different it is from the others. Season 1 it was Henry's sexual frustration, season 2 it was him taking control of everything as symbolized through him eating the swan. I season 3 I think it's his self-disgust and some fear about where he is heading -- at some level I think he sees he's fallen a bit to be so attracted to a silly girl like this. Agreed, I liked that they did bring in Gregory, but they should have brought him in earlier in the season.

It was a nice touch, but I would also have liked to see more of Jane after the birth of Edward. Seems Henry was more deeply in love with Jane than the 3rd season showed until she was dying.

The downfall of Cromwell was too fast, Wolsey and Anne got so much attention for theirs but Cromwell's happens in an episode. They have done such a good job of making people rethink who Thomas Cromwell was and have made him a human being, that they just fall asleep at the wheel when dealing with his death.
Katherine Howard is so unattractive it is no joke.

This is very well portrayed in the movie Henry VIII (the one with Bonham Carter as Anne Boleyn). I noticed Cromwell did not utter a peep. And didn't he (in real life) give some kind of a speech either on scaffold or to someone else that he did not mind dying for his faith?

I think the dowager duchess looked like a smarmy dirty old woman and the dormitory like a Chinese brothel. Not accurate at all; they lived in a decent home and the guys who came in were mostly from noble families; they did so covertly at night under cover of darkness like horny teenage boys. Dereham "snuck" into Katherine's bed and took advantage of a young girl's need for affection. And on the show she looks like the pick of the litter; the "come hither" and Bryan looking like a pimp...
