I don't think metalempress said Henry was Satan, just that absolute power is Satan's ultimate temptation (think Christ in the desert where Satan tempted him by showing all the kingdoms of the world and said "they will all be yours if only you will bow down and worship me.") 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Since I am not religious I tend to think that far from Henry being tempted by an etheral evil being, he merely succumbed to his human weaknesses. We humans are complex creatures who have the capacity for great good or great evil depending on which path we choose. If you believe in God ...then only he/she is totally Good with no capacity for Evil. Henry believed he was a god....unfortunately he did not show mercy or kindness.

There are other sayings which are appropriate :

"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men."

"Unlimited power is apt to corrupt the minds of those who possess it; and this I know, my lords, that where laws end, tyranny begins."........and interestingly Michael Hirst used a version of this when he had Henry Pole say : "since there is no judiciary whats left is only tyranny"

all of these apply to Henry.....unfortunately

I agree, MsSquirrly. We humans have a capacity for good & evil & power can corrupt. However, in Henry's case, I think there might have been more going on like a serious medical condition or mental illness that turned him into what he became in his later years.

Very true lettice, he was dealing with a lot of pain on a daily basis, he had several fevers and then there was the possibility of uncontrolled diabetes. And we do see 1536 as a turning point in Henry's personality which was when he had the jousting accident and was unconscious for several hours. So yes illness, another one of our human weaknesses, would definitely have affected his personality.
