"On the show I kept wanting Phillip to show back up and runaway with Mary. They travel the world, and eventually end up on their own private island. Or France"That would have been nice, and I expect Mary day dreamed about it... Wish I had a time machine... Do you find this valuable? |

Oh, snap, why are we wasting our time on all of these Tudor narcissists when Phillip of Bavaria exists out there?????I'm not speaking about historical Phillip of course. I nearly swooned watching him in episode 8. Pretty, pretty, pretty. And such a sweet kiss! Too bad it couldn't work out. :-( Even though it would have been horribly wrong...heck yes, give Mary and Phillip an island. In fact, I hear there's a whole "New World" across the pond...there's bound to be some place for a young royal couple somewhere. Do you find this valuable? |

Okay, I could be reeeally stupid right now.. but is this historically correct.. at all? Or did they make this guy up? I've been searching for any trace of this guy on the internet and all I've found was a list of Dukes of Bavaria and during 1540, there were two. William IV and Louis X. What am I missing here? Haha.

Haha."He really did exist and is mentioned in a few Mary bios-and as previous posters mentioned he courted Mary in 1540 thereabouts and again in 1543. His courtship ended sadly when Henry VIII ended the Cleves union. It is frustrating because he was just the right age for Mary-just 13 years older and Mary was still in the bloom of youth at 23. :-( Some bios suggest Mary was repulsed by the idea of marrying a Protestant. I'd like to think that she remembered her first Phillip after being abandoned by the second in her final days. I like to think she remembered that sweet kiss on her deathbed. In my alternate Tudor universe they had much more than a sweet kiss behind those curtains at the ball-after all others seemed to have some fun back there even amongst the dancing ;-). Mary and Phillip spent an awful long time together as the King was treated to an erm eccentric display with a ring by young nymph Katherine Howard. It was interesting to see the contrast of young love between Mary and Phillip, and her father Henry's jaded, blatantly sexually charged moment with KH. In Princess Mary's final sad scene she looks as if she dressed up specially to be courted by Phillip with Queen Anne as chaperone. Heartbreaking scene and Mary looks especially beautiful-one thinks 'if only Phillip had seen her'. I believe in this scene she is wearing the 'magnificent diamond cross' that according to contemporaries the real Duke Phillip gave Mary. Do you find this valuable? |

As to the episode-by far my favourite as it had so much more of Mary and a little romance if achingly brief for her-I kept thinking what lovely, sweet and elegant manners both Queen Anne and her cousin Duke Phillip had compared to those ill-bred Tudor courtiers-especially the King. Anne of Cleves remained gracious and held herself together with the dignity of a the Queen she was when Seymour gave her the news in his usual sadistic and gleeful manner that her marriage was annulled. Joss Stone did an outstanding job and I hope she too is brought back along with handsome Colin O'Donoghue in the final season. The Duke visited Mary twice in her life so I hope hope hope the fictional Duke is also brought back once more for Mary-perhaps he is invited for another visit by AOC and he tries to renew his courthship of Mary.

Joss Stone did sign on for S4, so we'll be seeing more of her! I agree she did a wonderful job. Perhaps more acting gigs are in her future!

"I agree! Luckily for us, Anne of Cleves and Henry stay friends after the annulment :). "I am happy Joss is to be brought back for the final season! It will be interesting if she is shown as a sister/friend to the King and he learns to respect and admire her gracious qualities even though he could never be attracted to her. In some bios it is said Anne was glad to escape with her life after the annulment-but on the other hand I have read accounts that Anne was hopeful the King would re-marry her after the Katherine Howard disaster. If so-Anne was off the mark. She got the best of all Henry's wives imo. Even Katherine Parr had a meloncholy end interlaced with scandal due to her husband's alleged molestation of the young Princess Elizabeth. Do you find this valuable? |

It will be good to see the difference. I have also read that Anne and Kitty were friends and that they danced together at some holiday, I think it was Christmas. I have read the same things as you so it will be interesting to see what Hirst does with it. I agree that she got the better life even compared to Katherine Parr as she had to fight for her life at one point as the king had an arrest warrant drawn up and of course the disaster of her 4th husband. Oh, if only it had worked out! A happy Mary, with a loving husband and some babes! Think of all the suffering that could have been avoided. The combining of Churches, too - it would have made Mary more tolerant, and continued the Tudor dynasty. One of history 's great 'what might have beens.'
