500 years ago - Henrys accession to the throne

Today I found a story in a newspaper about Henry - I didn't know that he ascended the throne exactly 500 years ago...and so I try to visualise this day...how was the weather? How many people celebrated this day in which way and which expectations did they have? Which feelings did Henry have? Was he nervous? Or proud? Did he feel confident to be Englands king by Grace of God? It's so fascinating to imagine how it really was...500 years later now where we know exactly how this kingship ran and ended. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I think about those things too Mrs.Cromwell. And also, I'm sure a person in England 500 years ago may have lived their entire life never even seeing the King, maybe not even a likeness, compared to today when we have television. Do you find this valuable?

god no. That would be pretty bad. I am one of those annoying Americans who keeps trying to force British History on every American kid.

Today I asked the kids to draw a famous British Royal and one kid drew Lenn Goodman (a judge from dancing with the stars?). He told me that Lenn was "British Royalty." haha

In Germany there is no difference being made in school between global history and our own, it's all just one history class.
But I think it focuses too much on western (European) history. There is tons of history about Asia and South America I only discovered later in life.

I think it must have been mild weather (it's England, after all) and I can imagine Henry felt everything from joy - he was king, had a lovely bride and would certainly bring a Golden Age to Britain - to sheer angst. After all, he was only 18. Even though we know he was self-confident, he never forgot how quickly the people's love can turn into open rebellion. I think he strongly believed he was meant to be king - it was God's will, after all, so no mistakes there - and I am sure he wanted to be the best king England ever had. So no pressure at all. ;)

I think he was happy to finally go and joust because his father had not allowed him to do that. I think Parliament even tried to prevent him from doing it, so he actually entered a joust in disguise!

That's too funny. I'm surprised nobody mentioned Princess Diana, or Prince William or Harry? Not even modern royalty was mentioned. Wow, so different compared to how I was brought up in Canada.

I remember there was a badge I needed in Girl Guides (the equivalent of Girl Scouts) and it had to do with Canadian government and part of the test for that badge was how does one appropriately address the Queen of England (curtsy). Granted it's incredibly unlikely anybody I knew in my troop would meet the Queen but that was part of my badge requirements.

There has been quite a lot on British television to mark the anniversary - programmes on the excavation of Henry's palaces and a fascinating four-part series by David Starkey called 'Henry - Mind of a Tyrant' showing how Henry started off as a pleasant young man who wanted to be a good king and ended up as a despot. And the actors in the programme are very good - most of them look more like their real-life counterparts than those in 'The Tudors'..
