Henry's love slaves?
Mar 23 2009, 5:15 PM EDT
I don't know about any of you, but I am not pleased with Season III promo pics - especially "thy kingdom come" which shows Henry sitting on an orgy-chair. What is this supposed to prove? I think it insults the intelligence of viewers to suggest that the only thing people will want to watch for are love triangles (Ursula, Jane) and other escapades...my other gripe is that the characters look way too Hollywood, even in costumes. Jane Seymour attracted Henry by her so-called purity, not by her cascading blonde hair (CHECK OUT HER ROOTS) and I have never seen an English lady posing like Ursula - who looks like a belly dancer in the pic. Ladies had beautiful posture. I noticed the Catherine Howard coming up is also a sloucher. Yes, I know, I know, it's supposed to be provocative. I think they have gone way over the top - or should I say, scraped the bottom? MY opinion.

Yeah, Jane's roots could have used a little fix up. I think though, many of the pictures with the way they look, like the one with Henry, Brandon and Cromwell it looks like a painting. I think with the sexiness, a little over the top. But then again, I don't exactly care, what I d care about is... Henry in the top picture looks awful. IMO.

Does anybody here really think either of the ladies look "regal?" - someone who would be nobility, a lady in waiting, a queen? Maria Doyle Kennedy is a part time rock singer but she carried off the class of Katherine of Aragon without blinking. I don't think you can just put somebody in a period costume and - presto - you have an authentic character. I have a real problem with the hairstyles on the show - they are nothing like how Tudor women wore their hair...for instance, from what I understand, women only wore their hair down in public to portray virginity - such as at their wedding, or Elizabeth's coronation, for example. Even though JRM in no way resembles the realy Henry VIII, he looks more real in his role than the women do. Seasons I and II had some great plots, dialogue and acting. From what I see of Season 3, it looks like a lot of nudity, blood, and psycopathic behavior. I'm disappointed but it's just me. :( ...

Yeah, no women actually looks like they could be from the Tudor Era, I think that the Costume ppl went a little too far in "modernising" the clothes. They're beautiful, but still... Yeah, the hair is what bothers me the most. Married women were not allowed to wear their hair down in public or uncovered. Only virgins were allowed their hair down and the Queens could too, but only on Special Occasions/ Parties, etc. The men seem to be wearing the appropriate clothes (although the hair is wrong, the most popular hair cut then was a pageboy-straight hair style). I think this season will be good though, and I cannot wait!!

Looks like I'm the only one who rated your comment "valuable"!I totally agree with you, karenofbethany. Season 3's promo pics are absolutely ridiculous and hilarious. But hey ho, it is 'The Tudors' after all! Do you find this valuable? |

I'm not really fond of the Season 3 promo either, it is kind of tacky and not well done anyways. I thought it was a bad photoshop job when I first saw it. However, I don't really think it is meant to symbolize Henry's sex slaves, although I doubt they cared that it created a sexual image. I see it as more of the body count that Henry has accumulated during his reign. All of those he ordered to be killed...after all, some of them are men. Henry has established his throne on the backs of and with the deaths of these men and women.

Probably, though, at first glance - and knowing showtime - I'd venture to guess a lot of people like me took it the "wrong" way. Looking at it your way shows a lot of thought on the part of the producers. Maybe they could have effected this idea even better with skulls and coffins rather than naked bodies intertwined? Now that I have seen two episodes (thanks to this wiki!) I maintain my opinon that the female characterizations are totally inappropriate. Women did not act like this, according to other Tudor movies I have seen and books I have read. Such behavior simply was not acceptable at court. And to think I judged Anne Boleyn's flirting in "The Other Boleyn Girl" as over-the-top! Ladies stood up straight because of their corsets! (Sticking point with me esp. because the court dances which became ballet originated around these times). They didn't "pose" like fashion models, and most of their more obvious flirting was in the context of dances like the Volta. Do you find this valuable? |

Just a comment on the roots.... Unfortunately there has been a recent trend called peek-a-boo roots. I have NO idea who thought it was a good look, but it is here. Some of it's followers is Jessica Simpson, Tira Reed, Britney Spears, etc..... Maybe her stylist was just sick, of maybe she went blind for a week. Who knows? In any case I find roots HORRIFIC... it is not stylish... There is Shabby Chic and there is just shabby!

I don't care about how trendy it is - it looks like a person couldn't be bothered. Either dye your hair, or don't. The ones who do it part their hair down the middle to show it off. All of the women on the show look like they've been styled up the yazoo. I know there's a woman co-producer, I just wonder that she didn't remember there was no Miss Clairol, blow dryers, flat irons, mousse, spray back then. All she had to do was look at some photos. The styles are so obviously contemporary but I want to be done whining about it now. Do you find this valuable? |

"The thing that bothers me about the roots is that, not that many people dyed their hair back in the Tudor days, so there just shouldn't be roots, at all. I know this isn't suppose to be a "full on historical" show, but come on, at least make some effort to get into your character; looks especially. But that's IMO. Do you find this valuable? |

I think somehow you are right ... They all look a bit too perfect it's all a bit to clean and some things are a bit to modern. But that's how the show is and you shouldn't be too fussy about it. It's not supposed to be a correct historic series. But I think compared to the first season they improved the style of the series. I got the feeling that there are less love scene's now but maybe that is still to come. I would find it better if there weren't so many of it. The Promo really isn't that good Jonathan looks old and a bit strange. But anyway the show is just... Different (compared to others)Do you find this valuable? |
