Chapuys
Jan 22 2009, 1:47 PM EST
Does any one know of resources regarding Chapuys' writings? There are exerpts of them in so many books, he is like a peripheral gold-mine of observation (even though he is subjective) (like Samuel Pepys' diaries) and I would love to read a collection of his letters, etc.) Thanks!

Hi karenof bethany. (I love your many thread ideas and interesting, informative contributions). I have looked online for any size collection of his letters (known sometimes as The Spanish Chronicle) The closest thing I found was "Letters and Papers, Foreign and Domestic, Henry VIII" in 28 volumes. Some of Chapuys' letters are on this database. Copy and paste this link (sorry it's not hyperlinked): http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=75462 Good luck! If you find a better online location of primary source correspondence, letters/papers/chronicle/calendar let me know! 4 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

I looked over the "Letters & papers, Foreign & Domestic, H8, Vol. 10 (January-June 1536). iIfound a million letters from and to diverse people and places, and about 5 or 6 from Chapuys to the Emperor Charles V. They sounded very familiar, being oft quoted by Weir and others. I read his letters in full and they were very interesting, especially the ones about Anne's miscarriage of a boy the day of Katherine of Aragon's burial. Thanks for piquing my interest in these primary sources, they are on my faves now! Have a great day!

I've been wanting the read Chapuys letters for a while but didn't know if some where available to view for free online. And this period (Summer 1536, when season 3 will start!) in particular is really interesting especially this letter about Mary: "The King, seven or eight days after the departure of the man whom I sent to your Majesty, took a fancy to insist that the Princess should consent to his statutes, or he would proceed by rigour of law against her, and, to induce her to yield, sent to her the duke of Norfolk, the earl of Sussex, the bishop of Chester, (fn. 1) and certain others, whom she confounded by her wise and prudent answers, till they, seeing that they could not conquer her in argument, told her that since she was so unnatural as to oppose the King's will so obstinately, that they could scarcely believe she was his bastard, and if she was their daughter, they would beat her and knock her head so violently against the wall that they would make it as soft as baked apples, and that she was a traitress and should be punished, and several other words. And her gouvernante was commanded not to allow any one to speak to her, and that she and another should never lose sight of her day or night. Nevertheless the said Princess found means to send me immediate information of everything, begging me not to leave her without counsel in her extreme necessity." How horrible for Mary! I knew the process of making her write the letter to submit to her father was quite coercive and at times she felt she was being physically threatened but Brandon sounds like a total brute in this description! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Ha ha, I'm a little preoccupied with Elizabeth and Ireland right now, but I'll ask my advisor (an early modern Hispanist), if she knows where a more specific volume might be. :-)

But, I must admit, I prefer to have books in hand, it's my lifelong weakness. Do you find this valuable? |

A lite read, 450 pages, but interesting none the less. Do you find this valuable? |

"I've just ordered a book called 'The Divorce of Catherine of Aragon: The Story As Told By The Imperial Ambassadors Resident At The Court Of Henry VIII' by James Anthony FroudeHowever Froude himself is quite bias/opinionated on the subject, going as far to state himself that "The popes are now understood to have never rightly possessed such an authority (grant dispensation), and therefore, according to modern law and sentiment, Henry and Catherine never were husband and wife at all" I bought the book for Chapuys's accounts on the subject, so I'll have to stomach my many disagreements with Froude.
