"Hello MsSquirrly. Yep, I've been all seasons bar the first and I've loved every single day of it, despite the long, long hours and uncomfortable shoes! I was chosen to be one of the King's counsellors from the start and am loving it! Costumes have become progressiveIy nicer, too! Looked in your gallery, but didn't see myself. I'll find some photos and link them here (don't know how yet but I'm sure I'll figure it out!) In the meantime, I'm in Anne Boleyn's execution scene, right at the front and standing just in front of Henry Cavill and to his right (long brown cloak - and I'm crying!!) - when Cranmer kneels, that's me looking around at him. Youtube link:

Cheers!"
You're the one with the brown hat? I added some more pics from that scene to the extras on season 2 page : http://tudorswiki.sho.com/page/The+Tudors+EXTRAS+-+Season+2

Can you see yourself there now?

No, I'm a little taller than him! The guy to the right and at the front: grey hair and brown cloak and chain of office. That's me!!

That scene was particulary impressive. Natalie Dormer gave the most powerful performance, and as you can see from my expression, it made me cry!

ah found you! Nice costume. The scaffold scenes have been very moving. Were you in the Bishop Fisher crowd? That was another scene that was so touching. Natalie did a great job of portraying Anne Boleyn especially in season 2. Have you been involved in other execution scenes like Cromwell in season 3 and Katherine Howard and Thomas Culpepper in the latest season?

I have managed, through holidays etc., to miss ALL of the executions this year! Saying that, we are filming in Kilmainham next week, and they don't film there for its beauty, so perhaps I'll get another ringside seat at a beheading. Filming there is hard, not only on the body, but on the soul, too. It is a grim, grim place. Do you find this valuable?

hmm I wonder who it will be? Perhaps Anne Askew's execution? Cos I know Culpeppers has been filmed but maybe its Katherine Howards. Anyway, it would be great if you can take some pics of the behind the scenes.

Katherine Howard's execution has already been filmed as far as I'm aware. I think they've filmed Askew's, too; I was chatting to Rod Hallet and he mentioned doing something unspeakable to her...

As to getting photographs; I couldn't possibly do that...But I know a man who can! Talking of which, I uploaded a few onto the gallery.

Thank you. I haven't located the photos yet but will keep looking around. So what's it like to work with Jonathan Rhys Meyers? Is he as intense as his screen presence suggests? Do you find this valuable?

The photos are in the photo section in the orange tab bar at the top of this page. They're just a few taken recently. Hope they give a taste of what we do...

And as to "working" with JRM, well, it has to be remembered that we (extras) are very much in the background of each scene - as our official title suggests. I suppose in a way it can be said that we "work" with him, but the truth is that we are there to react to direction from the Assistant Directors. Sometimes we are lucky enough to be directly involved in scenes with the actors; in the new series, I have been fortunate in that I've been chosen to sit in on the "War Councils". This means that JRM, and all the main male characters, meet to discuss the war with France...and I'm there too, at the same table, as the only extra. I don't have lines, but have to react to dialogue, looks etc. Some may count that as “working” with Mr. Meyers, then fine. I just felt privileged to be there and gave it my best.

I haven't had that much direct contact with JRM, so I'm not at liberty to offer anything but an opinion; he is an intense man. He's also a funny guy, and laidback, uptight, outgoing and intensely personal. Human, in other words. It is possible to almost feel his dedication to the character he portrays. The King is important to him, and that is obvious from his performances. His talent speaks for itself. It may sound like I’m an expert (and I’m not), but he reminds me of a young Richard Burton; there's something indescribably and artistically fiery bubbling away under his skin. Look him in the eyes and that will be self evident. Hear him get frustrated at something and you’re hearing passion, not grievances. I know the choice of him to play one of the most famous historical personages was criticized, but JRM has managed to shake off those detractors and gone on to make the character his own.

He certainly has made the part his. I know in the beginning I wasn't so sure he was a good choice but he has built the character on the personality rather than the physical stature. Ironic that Richard Burton also played Henry. He ....along with the great cast, music and production values has certainly made it eminently watchable!

Dear Noblemanintights, Hi from the US, Texas!! Thank you soooo much for your interesting insights on JRM. From what I have read, He "live's the role of Henry" During filming. Is it really true in your observations??
I have seen you on the show!! I find it so fantastic to hear what you are doing & observations.

That's awesome to hear you experience! I never get tired of it! ^^

I must say you are very fortunate as an extra because you seem to have some privileged scenes and screen time! Most of the time, extra are just there to make "crowd", a mass effect but you have much worth to the crew people obviously and just for that: congratulations! ;)

I noticed you on the AB death scene (I need a life! I've seen it too many times! lol!) and it's true I found you had a "presence"... I think you're at the council when Cromwell gets arrested, am I right? And I was "Oh, I know him! He was at AB's execution!" LOL!
It must have been a great experience to witness Natalie Dormer's performance on this very particular scene, actors can do so many wonderful things!

These pics are definitely awesome! That's it! I can't wait! Easter will be far too long to come!^^

Hello JRMfanAdrienne in Texas!

Funnily enough, there is an extra on the Tudors who hails from Texas! Look out for a big, very tall (6ft 4) chamberlain in the next series – dressed splendidly in black, including hat, and with longish curly hair (he’ll be right at the front of a scene where someone is to be punished horribly…) And listen out for his excellent English accent! We all complimented him on it, and he took it with good grace. Really nice guy.

Don’t know where you heard that JRM acts like the King all the time! As I’ve said previously, he is a normal guy but with an extraordinary talent; he may well come on set, totally focused and with a mind to completing a difficult or emotional scene, and that could be misconstrued as him “being in character”. Cynical folk may also misinterpret the real Hollywood aura - a presence - that he has as this alleged royal “aloofness”, but I’d put that down to their own failings. JRM can switch between being a lad from Cork, to being the most powerful monarch of the 16th century with consummate ease and in a blink of an eye. It’s quite something to behold, and an ability that the other actors have as well. As soon as the director says “action”, everyone’s in character, no matter what was happening right up to that moment. Makes you realise how gifted these guys really are.

I can’t believe you’ve seen me on screen!

Hi MsSquirrly. No, they are extras just like me. The actress who's playing Elizabeth is much younger, in her early teens, and is very, very good.

Hello Lady-Anne!

Yes, fortunate is the correct – and very apt - description. It’s a joy to be associated with the Tudors. Really going to miss it when it’s gone.

It’s an even bigger privilege to be put at the front of a scene (and behind the actors, obviously), though I must stress that it’s not just me who’s chosen for these things. There seems to be an “A-Team” of extras – counselors, pages, yeomen etc – who are selected on a regular basis to be within the camera’s focus (whereas most of the time, we are blurred and deep background). What this achieves, I believe, is a sense of plausible continuity for the look of the royal court. That the same extras have been chosen year on year to portray (in our own small way) the same “characters” - in my case the counselors - has supported the idea of an ongoing hierarchy of nobles assisting the King. Either that, or the casting department know we’ll all turn up at the drop of a (Tudor) hat!

Anne Boleyn’s death scene was special. Natalie Dormer is an incredible actress, and the emotions I felt – and displayed – because of her performance were real, that’s how good she is. I wasn’t the only one crying, believe me. She has the poise, authority and ability of a real A-lister. Amazing actor.

And the same can be said for Jolie Richardson. She’s regal and dignified on set and whilst that makes her perfect for the part of Catherin Parr, it’s her subtle observations of the behaviour of English royalty and the inflections in her voice that will wow audiences.

I’m a lucky, lucky man working in such close proximity to such accomplished artists.

Dear NobleManinTights, I did not mean, I think JRM is an aloof person in real life! From all I have read he is charming! I was speaking of the quotes I have red where he speaks of how he stays in character during filming even on his off time, except football. I just can not imagine the stress of not leaving a "character" at work. I only asked due to worry after reading on the JRM fansite were he had a bad experience in the airport in June . JRM is masterful & brilliant as the king and nobody could do a better job. He better get awarded this time!!
