Steven's talent....
Jul 25 2008, 11:28 AM EDT
I remember when he was in Leeds Youth Players. He was so talented back then so it doesn't surprise me that his talent keeps growing and growing. He was also secretly drooled over by MANY girls in LYP, unfortunately he had a high school sweetheart! It would be nice if he were more recognised for his talent than he is. Yes, he was amazing as Buckingham. I remember saying to my boyfriend, "That guy is so Shakespearean!" and then later found out on imdb.com that he had done some Shakespeare. He has a mesmerizing screen presence. Do you find this valuable?

Have to agree with you both. He is very talented. I know it is like a mortal sin to say, but I think that he would have made a great Henry VIII....he certainly looks more the part. Don't get me too wrong, I do love JRM as Henry! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Phyically he does look more like Henry. I think he would have held his own playing that part, however, JRM is superb and you do forget that he doesn't look like Henry.

My husband seconds your treason--he thinks SW should have been cast as Henry instead of JRM, maybe that they should have swapped roles. He was really disappointed when they followed history and beheaded him in the series! (If Margaret can marr into Portugal.....)

It certainly was a shame that he wasn't around for very long, but you never know maybe he had other committments coming up and couldn't take on a longer role.

I've heard this comment come up before for the obvious reason that he looks like the pictures of the historical Henry. His a fine actor and he could play the role, but it would not have been as intriguing a show in my opinion. There's a lot of good in this show and many wonderful actors but JRM brings something truly unique. He's a great looking, sexy guy, but it's the intensity, unpredictability and touch of madness that he brings to the character that I really don't think any one else can duplicate. It would be a very different show, a very different tone and sensibility without him, and I would not find it as interesting. Do you find this valuable?

I tend to agree Frogy23. And the way I see it, is that the casting of actors who do not necessarily look like their historical counterparts is to add to the drama. Henry was - so its said- a good looking guy for his era - his colouring, build etc were what was viewed as attractive in those days (mind you, you wouldn't dare say otherwise would you!).
I think they have cast a modern day 'attractive' guy, to make us see how attractive Henry was, obviously coupled with the power he had, and power is still a very attractive thing for many women in this day and age.
They are also casting the women against type - Anne Boleyn was not viewed as attractive for her time, but Natalie Dormer is stunning - I think modern day audiences would not understand why a king would fall for, and change the course of history for, a women who was not 'all that'. (I think she looked ok by the way but in those days apparently her looks were not what was seen as attractive). And Jane Seymour was - sorry Jane fans - rather plain by the looks of her pictures, but the woman playing her is gorgeous.
Oddly enough I have heard that when Joss Stone plays Anne of Cleves they are going to make her ugly! I don;t understand why really when they haven't gone with the same looks for other characters! And it was only Henry who did not like her, I don't thinkshe was that bad and there are rumours that Henry was only so offended by her because she snubbed him first!
