I thought he was quite pointless on The Tudors, but I don't like or dislike him in any other format. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

You are entitled to your opinion..... but as the reformation is a huge part of the story of Henry VIII, if the catholic pope had been left out of the equation, it would have been a huge gap in the story. Plus Hirst wrote some great lines for him to say and he delivered them so well.

If you are going to put together a list of THE classic movies of all time... most people will put Lawrence of Arabia on that list and O'Toole was magnificent in that role. He was such a beautiful young man....I am not so sure he has aged that well but then he is in his 80s and has been a hard drinker. I always had a soft spot for Goodbye Mr Chips too. I saw that the other day and you can see it was made in the 60's but I loved his portrayal of the awkward professor who falls in love with an actress.

I loved that the show had Pope Paul III mention in the presence of Campeggio that his grandson would make a good cardinal someday. Wait ! Popes aren't supposed to have grandsons! This highlighted the entrenched corruption that had plagued the papacy for a hundred years.

In fact Pope Paul III made his grandson, the Ranuccio Farnese, a cardinal at the age of 15 in 1545. He was nicknamed Cardinalino or "Small Cardinal."

Pope Paul III himself was a beneficiary of nepotism: as a young man he was made a cardinal and given many lands and bishoprics primarily because his sister Giulia Farnese-Orisini (La Bella Giulia) was the then Pope Alexander VI's mistress. When Pope Paul was a cardinal (Alessandro Farnese) he was nicknamed "the petticoat cardinal." Ouch! But he was a great statesman and very able administrator; he went down in history as a much admired and effective pope.

I adored Peter O'Toole's perfromance on the show. He was wonderful!

I recently saw a photo of Peter O`Toole backstage filming series 2 of the Tudors, done up in his Papal costume, with a pint of guinness in one hand, and a cigarrette in the other. Proof, as if it were needed, that the man is a legend.
As for his performance on the show, it was sublime. Especially when Campeggio reminds him of `the great matter` and he reponds with `Oh...That again`. Just brilliant!!
