Me too! I would just love to cuddle up next to him and listen to him speak :)

Also love Guy of Gisbourne/Richard Armitage from Robin Hood. Poor guy is so unlucky in life and love, i need to give him a big hug. And Richard Armitage in leather = drool. Hands off Geraldine Granger, he's mine!
Hate to admit i do read Twilight but i like Carlisle above all the other boys. Kind, calm, understanding and loving

Everytime i see something written about Wolverine i always think of Marcus from UK big brother. All those who don't understand who i'm talking about (most self respecting people on here lol) do NOT google or you will never look at Wolverine/Hugh Jackman the same ever again. If only brain bleach existed! And the man is such a psycho too.

Thomas More is most charming in his family life. He said of his children that he gave them more kisses than stripes, and Erasmus said that "He loveth his old wife as if she were a girl of fifteen."

I also very much admired his Utopia which had some passages that actually made me laugh out loud!

I still have my crush, I didn't even realize I had responded to this post. As usual, I haven't had time to read his biography. I am quite certain tht I have a crush on Jeremey Northam's portrayal of his role, in a brilliantly written script. That is what is going on here. If we knew him in real life, I doubt we would be busting our corsets! However, I am no different than any of you romantic, well read women, who found his performance sizzling. Of course I'm absolutely mad for the Catholicism show. Love the flagellation, incense, music, props, the veils chanting etc. And I'm Jewish. Same deal though, chanting, historical allegories, miracles, ancient texts, men hating and controlling women. We invented it! Hell yes, Thomas More rocks, especially if he looked like Jeremy Northam. HOWEVER, he was a huge believer in women's education, and was a wonderful Father. I hate the fact he burnt 5 men, but like many here have pointed out, I highly doubt that he would have done such a thing today. It is hard FOR US TO VIEW THESE CHARACTERS THROUGH our modern perspective. However, all of us corset busters, I for one, sure hope he was as divine as the Jeremy Northam's portrayal of Michael Hirst's adaptation of the TUDORS! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

"That's okay, I don't find having a crush on More wierder than a friend of mine who had a crush on Abe Lincoln (I seriously don't find him attractive at all!)."
You know, though, Lincoln had a 'good' (as opposed to a handsome) face. I find him attractive.

I have a crush on Thomas More because i think it is attractive that he didnt bow down to the king and signed the oath. He died with no doubts. He believed what he did was right. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree; one has to admire a man with the courage of his convictions. You might be able to tell from my posts that I greatly admire More. I loved the portrayal of him by Paul Scofield in "A Man for All Seasons". Scofield himself seems to have been a simple unpretentious actor who refused a knighthood saying that the title "Mr." was enough for him and declining a role because he said it came at the time of year he painted the shutters on his house. Scofield had a wonderful presence as More, as well as a sonorous voice and delivery appropriate to the character.

"Ever since watching the Tudors, I find I have a huge crush on the REAL Thomas More. I just read the Autobiography of Henry VIII and the Thomas More in the book (coupled with how I picture him, Jeremy Northam) has given me a huge crush on him. It's odd, I've never been smitten with someone that's hundreds of years older than I."
I so understand. I have a crush on Brandon too, but it's Cavill's portrayal. He is luscious, and I have to be nuts because he's 25, and I'm 58. He could be my son. God how can I think such thoughts. But there it is!

I love Lincoln's hands. Yes I have a crush on some men's hands. President Clintons' and Obamas'. Of course Obama's body language is beautiful. He's like looking at a dancer, athlete, and rock star all wrapped up in a gorgeous wrapper. Kind of like Henry the 8th as a young man supposedly.

President Obama is amazing, I agree; I think he has the most beautiful eyes. He also looks so young that sometimes I feel a mother's affection for him.

"I have a crush on him too. I think Jeremy Northam's stellar performance is to blame. Not being Catholic, I never knew much about him either. However, he was a cool guy. Brilliant, imaginative, top rate lawyer, and gifted man, important philosopher. Yes, he burnt a couple of guyss, but who didn't in those days. Isabella wiped out half the Jews in the inquisition, Henry didn't even mind beheading royalty or women, everyone in those days were brutal. Thomas More was a bit unhinged in the guilt department, as he was definitely into the self flagellation, hair shirts, and monastic tendencies. He seemed to have no trouble having 2 wives and 4 children though. Guilt and religious fanaticism is a powerful emotional slippery slope which he knew well. He was almost like those Opis Dei weirdos in The Da Vinci Code."
More was not really a weirdo. Mortifying the body is a part of Roman Catholic mysticism. The point is to keep the body under the control of the mind, but most of all to subjugate it so the mind can be fixed on God. The way Opus Dei was portrayed in 'The Da Vinci Code" was both innaccurate and sensational, but that kind of mysticism was practiced by many prominent Catholics through the centuries, and yes, I do believe some got carried away with it. I loved the 'Da Vinci' Code for what it was, by the way, a fictional thriller. More was conflicted throughout his life by the feeling that he should have been strong enough to put the emotional needs of the soul and the body to accept the vocation he felt very drawn to, the priesthood, but, and this is one of his contradictions, he was such a good husband and father. He really did love his wife and children, and unusual in a martyr, he tried to make provision for them when he knew in his heart that his convictions would end up costing him his life. In the end for More, the dichotomy was solved by his conscience which finally forced him to put aside all worldly concerns.
As for the Reconquista in Spain, I never could understand the thinking of the Catholic Kings to destroy the remarkable 'convivium' of Jewish, Muslim and Christian scholars that the courts of Spain and Portugal had enjoyed for so long. They impoverished their kingdom by expelling many of the best and the brightest.

"Thanks, I wasn't really thinking along those line.

But I do have to say, that I think if Sir Thomas More were alive today instead of back then his actions may have been different. He seemed very ahead of the times in his thinking but he still lived in a time when what he did was part of the norm. Not that I condone it at all, but like I said different time. I myself am Lutheran and I still think he was a great man, despite his faults.

Plus, Jeremy Northam is hawt."
hmm....I also have a crush on this man.... well I have a crush on some men in the series lol. I don't think he would have another judgement of religious changes if he'd lived these days , but he surely would not be beheaded. The idea is that he remained faithful to the religion with who he was born.

I agree, I think he would have seen things differently today. He was a very conflicted man for sure. A great husband father and lawyer, and yet, he felt a calling to chastity, and the priest hood. Poor baby. He was hot! Do you find this valuable?

I am a direct descendant of Sir Thomas More. Thank you for enjoying the significant life of my distant great grandfather, He was indeed a great man, a Catholic saint- as I too am Catholic, and truly, as stated. a "Man for all Seasons." Perhaps some day I will have the privilege of visiting England to trace my Bly(various spellings) ancestry and see where Thomas More lived and died. Do you find this valuable?

I, too, have a tremendous admiration for Thomas More.

By the way, you aren't also related to Captain Bligh of the Bounty, are you?
