Katherine Of Aragon

Decended from the house of Hapsburg Katherine Of Aragon was the youngest sibling of King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain.Queen Katherine was a distant cousin to King William I of Normandy also known as King William Duke of Normandy. Katherines parents came from a long line of royal an incestuous intermariages that left her maternal grandmother Isabella Of Portugal mentally ill as well as here sister who later became known as La Reina Juana La Loca (Queen Joan The Mad.)I have always wondered if Katherines many still born births had anything to do with ancestorial inbreeding. 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Katherine was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella...not the sibling. I agree with you that there was probably was a lot of inbreeding amongst the aristocracy but really, Anne Boleyn had a couple of stillbirths too so it is generally accepted that the reason was Henry and not his wives. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. I agree with MsSquirrly, from the evidence we have I believe the problem had more to do with Henry himself than either of his wives. Henry also came from a family of aristocratic "inbreeds" as well but then again most royalty married and remarried into related families for centuries before new blood was introduced into the gene pool. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Has it ever been proved that Henry had sphyillus(sp)? I heard that may have also been the cause of Katherine and Anne's many pregnancy problems. It was also said that it played a part Mary I's poor health as a child.

No it hasn't been definatively proven that Henry had syphilis, there is a compelling argument that he had diabeties though. There's much more written about that in the Henry VIII Controversies page on the wiki

Incest happened a lot in those days as people trying to keep the thrown or royalty within the family. However, in those days medicine wasn't very good and that's why there was a lot miscarriages, not necearrilly because of incest though.

Yeah, I read somewhere that he had syphillis but I take that conclusion with a grain of sand because he have several ailments at that point in his life.

Katharine of Aragon was not a Hapsburg; she was the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella; her royal house was the house of Trastramara which had ruled Castile and Aragon . The Hapsburg connection came in with K of A's sister Juana's marriage to Phillip the Handsome son of the Hapsburg Holy Roman Emperor, Maximilian. Their son, Charles V, K of A's nephew, nephew was a Hapsburg.
