"There is another painting that was done of her (I believe by Holbein as well), that it was revealed that a much larger nose was hidden under the top layer of paint--and it had been painted over with a smaller, more appealing version. She was also said to have been marked by small pox, which is also something that wouldn't have been feattured in a painting. Unlike photographs, when it comes to paintings there is that unknown factor of what happens when an image is filtered through the eyes of an artist."

Ha Ha, that was Holbeins form of "airbrushing" like they do these days for magazines & ads!

Even photos can be misleading depending on lighting, angle, etc. Soi you can imagine how a painting can distort!

I was closly comparing the paintiing of Anne of Cleves and a picture of Joss Stone I realised the had the same tye of eyes and eye area i know that sounds weird .But i think an actor or actress need to have the same kind of resembelence if not anywhere but the eyes and i think the casting directors got that one thing Right!. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Now that Anne of Cleves has been cast, I'm curious to see photos of what sort of "deconstructed" costumes she will be wearing. The costume designer, Joan Bergin, doesn't follow historically accurate costume guide lines and often creates these new and beautiful costumes that are inspired by history. The costumes are also reflective of character's raise in society (see Anne Boleyn through Season 1) and who they are through what they wear.

Anne of Cleves was known for her fashion because it was very German and completely different from the French and English fashions popular at the Tudor court at the time. Perhaps one of the reasons she was thought "ugly" is because she continued to wear a style of dress that wasn't considered fashionable. I'm very interested to see where Bergin goes with this, if she does, and how she will emphasize Anne's "foreigness" through her fashion taste.

I too am interested in how Anne of Cleves will dress. Her manner of dress was considered strange by English/French standards. It wasn't considered flattering to her face or figure.
The way things have gone thus far on the Tudors, most characters have been attractive in lovely costumes, so I believe it may not be any different for A of C.

Good point about the clothes not flattering her face or figure. I always thought her German headress (while made of beautiful materials) looked like something out of Star Wars and not flattering for most women's face shape.

Check out what they say about Anne on the "Raucous Royals" page, they also mention her fashion taste.

Anne of cleves' German style of clothing was remarked on as being clumsy and unflattering as were her German manners. It is possible that it was these, which can affect the perception of the most physically attractive person, i.e. "She was beautiful until she opened her mouth.", that put Henry off. As for how she smelled, given the personal hygiene of the time, Henry probably didn't smell too good, either. I read somewhere that the reason the custom of carrying clove-spiked fruit (pomanders) arose was that most people had BO. The sumptuous fabrics (except for linen and cotton) of the royals could not be laundered. People seldom bathed if ever. The same article said that most people were lousy (infested with lice).

I'm a wee bit annoyed by Joss' attitude about her character: "She wears frumpy clothes," says Stone, from her home in Devon on a break from filming in Dublin. "None of the sexy English corsets. I'm a German weirdo. I had to have a bloody German accent and play the harpsichord."

http://www.usatoday.com/life/2008-10-02-coming-attractions_N.htm

First of all Anne of Cleves wasn't musically talented, Hirst probably threw that in there to showcase Joss' talent. And two, I'll agree the hat she wears is ridiculous but it's not even close to the German cap the real Anne wore, it looks more Italian. But the gown in that still I think is beautiful not frumpy. I guess I'm upset because this isn't just a character on a tv show, it's an historical person who deserves some respect.

Do you think Joss Stone is pretty?
I think there's something about her that makes her...unconventionally pretty. I don't know, i can't put my finger on it. Her voice grates me a little though. Wonder if she's good at accents? Hope she sings. She could sing a lullaby to Elizabeth and Edward. That would be so cute!

Joss Stone has a real laid back attitude, so I don't think she was being disrespectful. And if you look at who Anna was in the Tudor court, well to put it bluntly she was a "German Weirdo" in an English Court.

I do agree the dress looks a tad bit Italian, but if you look at paintings by the German painter Lucas Cranach, the dress Joss is wearing looks very similar:

Joss's head dress reminds me of Amelia of Cleves's head dress:

I thought the hat was Italian, I like the dress it's definately in keeping with the mission to deconstruct the style of the period. The stripped stomacer reminds me of a later painting of Anne (the gold and black stripes).

In the article from USA Today Joss stated how she wanted to play Jane Seymour but her touring scheudle won't let her film as long as she would need to for that role, so she was cast as Anne. I don't think she be right for a Jane Seymour, Annabelle Wallis looks more of the part.
And I do agree with MaryElizabethEdward, she has an unconvential prettiness about her that's why I thought she would pass atleast in appearence for AoC - also a woman of unconvential beauty as Holbein captured in his paintings.

Oops, I'm sorry. I can't believe I missed that.
You're right about the hat, it does favour Italian:

I like the dress they have her in, I'm glad they didn't go over the top or fall into the false stereotype that Anna was "ugly and unkept".

I love Bergin's costuming. She's incredibly fun and creative. I thought the print on the skirt looked like a modern take on the suspenders of men's Lederhosen. I'm also excited about the description of the wedding night -- sounds like the scene will be a hoot. Finally I wouldn't take Joss's comments as disrespectful, nor would I take them too seriously. She's a young girl, after all, and just talking the way 21-year-olds do. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

"
The writers haven't held back in exposing several characters as homosexual. I have a suspicion that they are going to make Anne of Cleves a lesbian.
."
well I was researching for the AoC page and found this little snippet of information :

"She is known to have visited Henry & Katherine Howard & and knelt before her with gifts. In one instance, the two women danced the night away while Henry, with his abscessed leg retired to bed. "

I think Reginabee could be right with her suspicion! Plus when you think about it...maybe she was lesbian? She never married and she was very wealthy & would have been highly marriageable but she chose not to.

It seems the lesbian angle has already been used in a fictional book called "Vengeance is Mine: A Novel of Anne Boleyn, Katherine Howard, and Lady Rochford--the Woman Who Helped Destroy Them Both" by Brandy Purdy. I havent read this book and it has some VERY mixed reviews much like P. Gregory's books. I had to laugh when I read this review :

"I read up to half way in this book and thought it was quite good. Nothing spectacular but a good, solid, historical novel. Then I got to the part where Anne Boleyn does a sort-of "Dance of The Seven Veils" number with her nipples painted gold and I thought, "Well, it MIGHT have happened".

So I carried on with the book, but when I got to the part where Anne of Cleves and Katherine Howard are naked in bed together with a pot of honey, I just couldn't take it anymore. Is there REALLY any historical basis for this? I seriously doubt it. It put me off the rest of the book, though I did eventually finish it, all the time wondering if something even more outrageous would happen.

If you like your historical novels to read like a cross between the soap "Dallas" and the bawdy novels about Tom Jones, then this is your type of read. If however, like me, you like a little more substance and less conjecture, try Jean Plaidy. " [Ms. LReeves]

i must say i am rather glad joss did not play jane seymour, i will miss anita breim, i thought she was a lovely jane, lol when i read novels and history bios on the queens i always picture anita breim as jane lol and natalie as anne, theyre so right for the parts i think anyway

i have seen a couple of pics on this site of the new anne of cleves, joss dosent look stunning like the first three queens, which is good because it shows that the writers have tried to make anne of cleves appear more unappealing in henrys sights
