I'll repeat here what I said elsewhere. I'm spealing about Charles in the serie. I'm basing my point about the show and HC interview for season 2.I don't think Charles starts to 'hate' Anne in season 2. He already hated the Boleyn in season 1 because he thought they were schemers (see HC interview who said so too)...As Henry's best friends, he feels they're up to no good and seek personnal interests in rising...He became an allie cause Margaret made him to to get back to court... In season 2, his fears are confirmed when he heard rumours about Anne's behaviour prior Henry, which made him bannished from court for his comment to the king. Plus he sympathies with Katherine oA's cause., because as a father, he understand her pain of being separated of her daughter (again, see HC interview for season 2). Charles's becoming a father has changed a lot his priorities....So, it's another reason to 'hate' Anne cause he knows Anne hates K and Mary and she's the reason for their suffering. As for his 'repent' at the end of season 2, Charles is not a fool, he suspects that Anne had been unfaithfull but he's not stupid enough to believe she slept with 100 men like Henry...I don't think he regrets his actions in Anne's downfall (see the scene of the beheading, he's the last one to knee, so he's not really sorry...but, with the 'fighting' scene with Boleyn in prison, Charles shows that he kinda feels sorry for her to have been a pawn in her father's hand, even if he knows Anne is not a saint...As a father, Charles don't understand how a father can rejoice of 'keeping his domain' while his children are put to death....That's why Charles gets mad, cause Boleyn acts a selfish greedy bitch and not like a grieving father... So to me, Charles's behaviour is coherent. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

"Having not seen season one or Henry courting Anne I saw his hatred of her as being odd and unfounded. As you said Antoinette99 perhaps in history it was not this way."The real Charles Brandon didn't start off hating Anne,. at least not right away. He didn't start hating Anne until Henry put away Katherine. Charles Brandon support Henry early in his relationship with Anne, but his support of Henry VIII and Anne cause a lot of problems between him and his wife Mary , the French Queen, who was very vocal about her support for Queen Katherine. Brandon didn't like the way Henry and Anne was treating Queen Katherine and Mary, so he sorta withdrew his support. Anne didn't like Charles Brandon, and made sure he knew it, nor did she get along with the king sister. Do you find this valuable? |

"Anne didn't like Charles Brandon, and made sure he knew it, nor did she get along with the king sister. "Are there any sources for that? I have only read once that she didn't like Brandon and accused him of sleeping with his ward, but nothing more. Wonder what else went on between them? Do you find this valuable? |

Historically, I suspect Charles Brandon hated Anne Boleyn for one major reason: if Henry VIII died without a male heir, Charles and Mary's son, Henry Brandon, Earl of Lincoln, might have been named by his uncle Henry as his successor. The Duke of Suffolk would have lost that power base if Anne had borne Henry a son.By the way, Charles and Mary's son was betrothed to Catherine Willoughby, but Charles married her after Mary's death, because his son was terminally ill, and the Duke of Suffolk's finances weren't too robust, either. "Historically, I suspect Charles Brandon hated Anne Boleyn for one major reason: if Henry VIII died without a male heir, Charles and Mary's son, Henry Brandon, Earl of Lincoln, might have been named by his uncle Henry as his successor. The Duke of Suffolk would have lost that power base if Anne had borne Henry a son.I don't think he hated her because she would take away his son's chance at the throne. He supported the divorce initially like many other people (even Reginald Pole I read). I think everyone just wanted the King to finally have a son and KoA wasn't providing one. Then sometime later it became clear that Henry was serious about marrying Anne Boleyn of all people when he got his divorce and a lot of people started to turn cold on the whole divorce thing. I think historically he started hating her then and for the same reason why everyone else started hating her (even her own uncle). Because she was behaving rashly to everyone and wasn't exactly making friends. I read that she threatened Henry Guildford (a close friend of Henry's), telling him she would have his head, once she was Queen! She made a lot of people, who initially supported Henry's divorce turn away from it that way. As far as Brandon goes, his wife hated Anne Boleyn with a passion, because she was close friends with KoA. So the guy might have had some personal conflict about the whole Anne Boleyn thing, what with his wife hating her and Henry loving her and him being close to both of them. Do you find this valuable? |
