Mary, Queen of Scots, a new movie
May 6 2008, 3:30 PM EDT
Okay she's not technically a Tudor (just a distant cousin) but I thought it might be worth while to start a thread about the new movie that's coming out (God only knows when). For those who haven't already heard the news from the grapevine, Scarlette Johanson has been cast as the starring role in "Mary, Queen of Scots". So far I've heard that the production has switched directors (from John Curran to Peter Noyce) and the majority of filming is to be done in Ireland! (just like the Tudors series) Has anybody else heard about the film? Please share info :)

I heard exactly what you have. Scarlett Johansson is playing Mary,Queen of Scots. I know Philippa Gregory is coming out with a new book about Mary, Queen of Scots called "The Other Queen". It's coming out in September, but I don't think the movie is based on that book.

Oh good, I'm glad it's not another PG adaptation. Perhaps it's a remake of the earlier film from the 70's, with Vanessa Redgrave?

Scarlett Johanson? That should be interesting.

That's pretty exciting...I recently bought the old Vanessa Redgrave movie...it came as a pair with "anne of a thousand days". I checked out www.imdb.com and it says its in pre-production and written by Jimmy McGovern who I know nothing about. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431255/ Do you find this valuable?

Maybe. I just read a synopsis of it, and it says that the emphasis is on her strained relationship with her cousin Elizabeth I. That's no surprise, but it doesn't say yet who is playing Elizabeth I or when the release date is.

Yeah, I had my doubts when I first heard too. I really like Samantha Morton in the last Elizabeth movie, I thought she was great!

For some reason, I seem to recall someone telling me that it was going to be based on Antonia Frasier's book. If that is true (but I doubt it is) that should be quite interesting. My prof is totally excited because he is obsessed with the Queen of Scots. He saw a picture of her in Scotland and fell in love, if that is possible.

Of course, I am in love with JRM, so I have no excuse to judge, mind you. :-D

Will they have her with a Scottish accent or a French accent I wonder. Or maybe she won't change her accent at all.

Ok. so now I definitely don't think it is supposed to be based on Frasier's book, it does not give any credits to her on the IMDB page. But...it says it is supposed on concentrate on her conflict with Elizabeth.

Hmm. Scarlett's a little young to be playing Mary in the 1580s.

Oh, and to find more on the movie, go to the international movie database at www.imdb.com and type in Scarlett's name to find the movie. Do you find this valuable?

She should speak in a French accent! Part of being disconnected with Scotland was what got her into so much trouble in the first place.

Speaking of Mary, while we are at it, did anyone ever read about the story when she first sought refuge with Elizabeth in England? About Elizabeth sending her the washwoman's clothes to wear and the messenger was so embarrassed and said it must have been a mistake?

I think Mary spoke with a Scottish accent, only because most of her quotes of "ye" instead of "you". Morton had a Scottish one in Elizabeth the Golden Age, but that could be wrong.

I found that strange; she was in France from age five or thereabouts - younger than Anne Boleyn was when she went abroad and she is supposed to have kept a hint of a French accent for the rest of her life. Do you find this valuable?

If I had to guess I would say she probably had a French accent. It makes more sense. Do you find this valuable?

That or she intentionally cultivated a Scottish accent sometimes. Do you find this valuable?

My guess is French, although, like you say Holly, I believe she cultivated a Scottish accent at times when it suited her. Her mother was French, and spoke to her in that language, and it was many courts' language of diplomacy. Additionally, when she went to France, she was there for 15 years of more at court and then as the country's queen. Admittedly, she had the Scottish Marys with her, but they were just as young as she and would have been influenced by the court language, too.

There's also every possibility that she had a flawless accent no matter what language she spoke. Elizabeth could speak without an accent in French, and was near as masterful in other languages, so it is possible that Mary just spoke with the accent of wherever she was at. Both women were highly educated in the languages they were taught.

So, my vote is that if she had an accent, it was French. But if we give credit to the language training nobles and royalty received as children, they probably had no accent in whatever language they spoke, so as to sound more sophisticated.

Well, she does have Tudor blood; Mary, Queen of Scots was Margaret Tudor's (Henry's elder sister's) granddaughter.

Oh, please, God, don't let it be based on a Phillipa Gregory book!

Mary Stuart's (Queen of Scots') mother was the French Princess Marie of Guise, but I thought she was raised in Scotland.
