Moment of madness I'd say, given he didn't request the King's permission to marry her, he'd have to be mad to have done so! As for that comment on how quickly he changed in the SERIES (not certain if he was really like that, wasn't exactly a looker in his time), i think it was due to Margaret's death, because where was he when she was dying, with another woman! That's probably why he had this whole 'changed man over night' resolution, at least that's what i think!

There are so many of you here that know so much and add alot to this wiki. So kudos to everyone!"Hi Funrod! There's a book called The Thistle and The Rose by Hester W Chapman that is a bibliography of Mary and Margaret Tudor. It was Mary that was the real Tudor Rose, she was beautiful with long, looong golden hair. This book is old and you may not find a copy of it, but check ebay if you're interested. Mary married Louis XII of France, and really didn't smother him in real life. It's said she 'danced' him to death. Margaret was more like Henry. She married the Scots King James IV and had 2 sons. After he died, she was more or less expendable and she married the Earl of Arran...oh, wait..or was it Angus? Sorry! She was embroiled in a marital scandal herself , she got divorced and re married. Henry thought it quite terrible and was really pissed-off at her. This was about the time he began to notice Anne, and before his scandals happened. Margaret had a hard time and her escapades are worth reading about. Mary had asked Henry when Louis died if she could marry whom she chose, and Henry said yes. Brandon was one of Henry's esquires when he was very young and they became fast friends. Mary was the youngest and most likely fell in love w/Brandon when still a child. She'd already planned on marrying him someday, imo, and that's why she made Henry promise to let her marry whom she chose. She was Brandon's 3rd or 4th wife, I think 3rd. And I think she did die of consumption, a trait of the Tudor genes. Hope I could help. Regards, ETR Do you find this valuable? |

"And Mary had Jane Grey beheaded for treason as well "After the revolt Lady Jane Grey's father started, Mary had no choise but to have Poor Jane executed. As she would always be a rallying point for the Protestant cause. I believe I also read somewhere that Philip said he wouldn't come to England and marry Mary if she didn't first get rid of Lady Jane. Manily because he was such a stanch catholic. Do you find this valuable? |

Maybe she spared her, because Elizabeth, unlike Jane, at least attended Mass. I don't like the way they portrayed Charles and "Margaret"'s relationship in the series. No interaction before, sudden sex on the ship and that's it. As soon as they are married, he neglects her. What a waste! Do you find this valuable? |

I think Charles Brandon loved MARY (although in the series it is Margaret, which we all know is a Mary/margaret combo). Charles Brandon and Mary Tudor, are a story all their own, and it is poorly told in the series, but there are books on the Duke of Suffolk, as well as books on Henry's sisters and their respective lives.Charles Brandon knew of Mary's attraction to him for quite a while. Charles, Henry, and Henry's sisters spent time together in their youth, pre-Henry's monarchy. Mary and Charles had flirtations, but nothing came of it until after Mary was freed to marry a man of her choosing upon the death of the french king. It was a smart move, as Mary was intended to be used in negotiations with princes after her first marriage, but she sent a speedy letter to King Henry to remind him of the promise he made to his favorite sister. Henry played with fire by sending Brandon to fetch her, but I think he knew more than he let on. Charles and Mary had children, Mary died of what some now say was a form of cancer. I believe Brandon did love her, but I don't think he was going to take up holy orders or anything, so that lusty man married again, but this time, to the ward that was intended for his son!(Brandon was good at "intercepting" women who were intended for others!) Maybe she couldn't bring herself to execute her own sister or maybe she died before she was pushed into it or maybe she was too sad over how phillip treated her and left her? "The relationship between Charles and Margaret. Lust? Love? Means to an end?"Yes, I would say that he really loved her. In my opinion he was just not mature enough at the time of their marriage to realise how much she meant to him, and that she was the love of his life. I do not think that he was able to think that far. I also assume that he constantly mistook sex for love which might have had mental reasons. Remember, there is one scene in Season 1 where Margaret is caressing Charles, and he asks her what she is doing. This shows me that being caressed or caressing someone else must have been something completely unusual or even odd to him. Maybe he had not experienced anything like that before. In a DELETED scene (on the ship) in Season 1 there can be seen a slightly tender gesture by Charles towards Margaret but that's everything. I think that the shock of Margaret's death made him realise what he had lost, and so he changed. But in my opinion he was never able to love Catherine that much although being faithful to her almost all the time except for once. Do you find this valuable? |
