Although I think he's a great actor, after watching the outakes on You Tube I was a bit irritated. He acts like a child.

Antoinette2,
is that what you think? Why?
I thought that he did a great job to show the soft side of a man with a well structured character: this is a hard task. He may look too soft compared to the surrounding pseudo-machos. What do you think?

Hi alinagordelli. It wasn't Northam's actual portrayal that I didn't like. I thought he did a fabulous job and I've enjoyed him in many different parts over the years (remember Emma). What I didn't like were some clips I found on YouTube. (There are a bunch of Tudor videos made by all sorts of people and some of them darn good too). These videos were outakes done during the filming and Jeremy was doing a pretend vomiting thing over and over which seemed really childish to me. I was just so surprised at this behavior being so juvenille. It's my own fault for putting him on a pedestal, which I think sometimes is easy to do with great actors. You forget that they are just people, like you.
But as the character of Thomas More, he is great. He comes across very male, intelligent, and almost kind of stern. I think he would have been a tough parent, although probably still a loving one. Hope this explains it.

I thought he was merely trying to keep things light and relieve an otherwise boring situation....sitting around for hours doing nothing can be quite tedious. I didn't mind the antics at all!...and besides , when the cameras rolled and he had to perform be became the wonderful stern Thomas More. Do you find this valuable?

Antoinette, I watched these vidoes too. It does give an impression of overdoing the joke. However we do not know the context - may be they all joked about something related before the scene and this was a follow up. He did it sckillfully, though, I mean simulating the vomiting, did he not? :)
And one more thing - have you ever seen a man older than 16? This is the whole attraction about them! :)

Me too, anoinette2--I felt like he was overdoing it as well. The first & even the second time, yeah, it was funny. But then it just got old real fast. Don't get me wrong, I love Jeremy Northam & I think he is a fabulous actor. Not to mention real easy on the eyes. And it is fun to see how "serious" actors like Jeremy behave in between takes. But even Sam Neill, who was sitting next to him looked like he had enough of Jeremy's vomit performance. LOL But yeah, bwlass & alinagordelli, he was just being silly Jeremy after being serious Thomas More all day. Nothing wrong with that! Do you find this valuable?

Hi Gossip girl! Nobody is perfect - we know this since Jack Lemmon's time! :)
But we must admit that Jeremy's taste rarely abandons him. Again it could be that he wanted to jokingly annoy someone there on the set - who knows - ans succeeded! There are other funny episodes when he imitates old-fashioned plum voice reciting history pages - that was quite good. I also liked that he actually did not swear much.

I guess this supports the theory of always behaving yourself when you might be on camera. I also thought Same Neill looked like he was ready to clock him. I love Sam Neill. He's one of those men who just shouldn't age. What another great actor. Older sexy although playing the cardinal wasn't exactly a panty-turner.

I agree 100%, I haven't seen the vomit clips, but I can't see JN doing that, I love him being serious.

Aregon77,

really? I always thought that very serious men (the likes you can find in the City) are very boring. Jeremy is well known for his sense of humour. I must say I far prefer childish funny men (they are usually very kind) to the overly serious types.

Well, I found it highly amusing. I laughed for ages. He seems like a really down to earth man. Anyway, we all show off when theres a camera or something around. Do you find this valuable?

Actually have you watched other JN's DVDs? There are funny extras in some of them. He jokes a lot during the promotion conference for the Gosford Park, and is ususally very relaxed and down to earth. Do you find this valuable?

Hever, if you have not seen them yet, I would recommend Gosford Park, The Winslow Boy and Enigma - my favourites and the most acclaimed. I presume you have seen Emma.
