Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 18 2008, 3:54 PM EST Hey all- Does anybody have suggestions for novels to read regarding the Tudor period? Actual novels, not biographies- novels like Phillpa Gregory or Alison Weir's "Innocent Traitor", or Jean Plaidy's novels. I like to read it with a little flair and dialogues! Suggestions are welcome! I want to read more. Thanks! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 18 2008, 9:26 PM EST I havent read that but I recomend jean pliady if you read that then unless you can read in spanish you can read the trilogy of los reyes catolicos everybody respect or the trilogy of catherine di medici which is from jean plaidy Or Philippa Gregory the constant princess there is also alison weir fiction innocent traitor if you want more fiction then truth or historical then read margaret george's Henry Viii or Alan Gold's Pirate Queen or Boudicca, she is the best in Queen, read Boudicca really strong, emotional you will love it, if you are looking for something unbias of course since many books are way bias mm there is also margaret george's mary queen of scotrs which I finished reading a day ago which is great. There is also doomed queen anne Plain Jane from Laurien Gardner was really good, also read the spanish bride book of Anne boleyn from the same author also caroly meyer's saga of youn roayls Mary, Bloody Mary, Doomed Queen Patience Princes Catherine, Beware Princess Elizabeth. Also Thomas More's Utopia, The Boleyn Inheritance from Philippa Greggory. The Borgia Bride which is one bride who marries a borgia heir. very interesting also Mineko Iwasaki Geisha, A life I havent read this, Antonia Frasie the six wives, I have been reading it and I have liked it since it is neutral not as bias as Davis starskey who was really bias and although I enjoyed it, I was dissapointed such an educated man would take sides like forcefully convince you in his way. I prefer Antonia Frasier's who as I have read so far she is the most controversial and the most neutral If you like Alison weir I recomend her reading more of her non fiction then her fiction novel. Her bio about Elizabeth was really good. If you want to read Elizabeth then read robin aswell's the queen's bastard son which was great also read in the shadow of the cron. RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 19 2008, 10:58 AM EST I'The Sixth Wife' is a good book, also by Suzannah Dunn, 'The Queens Subtleties' is a good book. Her new book, 'The Queens Sorrow' will be out in July. Alison Weirs new novel, 'The Lady Elizabeth' will be out in April, as is Philippa Gregory's new book, 'The Other Queen'. Im currently reading 'Sex in Elizabethan England', by Alan Haynes, which is quite intersesting, and when I have read that I am going to start reading 'The Autobiography of Henry VIII' by Margaret George. At the end of Innocent Traitor, I almost wept, it was so moving the way Alison Weir described Lady Janes beheading. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 20 2008, 6:09 AM EST I adore the Tudors, I think that period of history was just so exciting. The other Queen, is about mary Queen of Scots, and The Lady Elizabeth is about Elizabeth before she became Queen. Here are the links to Amazon , describing what the books are about..http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lady-Elizabeth-Alison-Weir/dp/0091796725/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b?ie=UTF8&qid=1203505352&sr=1-1http://www.amazon.co.uk/Other-Queen-Philippa-Gregory/dp/0007190344/ref=pd_sbs_b?ie=UTF8&qid=1203505352&sr=1-1 Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 21 2008, 9:06 PM EST i have read SEVERAL books dealing with the Tudor Time Period, mostly Anne Boleyn, I think she is by far the most fascinating person I have ever read about... Some books I would recommend are; "The Children Of Henry VIII" by Alison Weir, "Six Wives; The Queens Of Henry VIII" by David Starkey, "Elizabeth, The Struggle For The Throne" by David Starkey, "The Lady In The Tower" by Jean Plaidy (an excellent author), "Elizabeth & Mary, Cousins, Rivals, Queens" by Jane Dunn, "The Other Boleyn Girl" by Philippa Gregory, "The Last Boleyn" by Karen Harper, "The Secret Diary Of Anne Boleyn" by Robin Maxwell, "The Queen Of Subtleties" by Suzannah Dunn, "In The Shadow Of The Crown" by Jean Plaidy, "Queen Of This Realm" by Jean Plaidy, "Murder Most Royal" by Jean Plaidy, "The Queen's Fool" by Philippa Gregory... there are many more, but those are among my favorite... I'm currently reading a book called "Threads" a story told "by Anne Boleyn" and her unyielding love of Henry VIII told in different "lifes" so far its excellent. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 22 2008, 5:54 PM EST I don't think less to read is such a good thing, but it all depends on how fast someone can read, you know what i mean? out of those two choices you set aside for her to read, i agree jean plaidy would be a better selection in my mind. The Lady In The Tower Being A Good read for a person wanting to play the part of Anne Boleyn, and possibly for Catherine I would recommend, "The Spanish Bride: A Novel Of Catherine Of Aragon" by Laurien Gardner, OR "The Divorce of Catherine of Aragon: The Story as Told by the Imperial Ambassadors Resident at the Court of Henry VIII. In Usum Laicorum" by James Anthony Froude Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 23 2008, 5:18 PM EST well emusipickle I thank you for you hoices, gave her the site and she thanks you to and shrew911 well I will play anne boelyn it is decides so I already read lady in the tower is my favorite book about anne, because it is much moe accurate then others, even more than robin maxwell's which I read only one, which is aobut the diary. So I love those books, now my friend although she will not play anne, she needs to know about all wives since she only knows pretty much the basic, lady in tower she will read, like you said it is a better read for me that will play anne, but I already read it and since she will be co director with me, well she still needs insight. I recomended her the spanish bride a novel of catherine of aragon since she will play catherine of aragon, i WILL read that to since I am co director with her and I havent read that one, but you told me it is a good read and probably it will be best for her since she is playing the part of catherine aragon. For catherine parr the sixth wife I remember mrs galloway told me it was a good insight into this protestant queen, since she THE ONLY protestant queen ever, so I just told a friend of mine to read that since she has more the looks to play the part. On Jane Seymour, I read Lauriend Gardner, Plain Jane a nd ti was really good, there is not so much novels aobut Jane you know. I dont know we have a lot of research to do, and we only have two wives to play for sure, the other two are still undecided and two missing lol so we will seewhat we can do. oh and emiuspickle I dont know a lot of novels about may boleyn but if I come across a good read like the ones you have read, I will be sure to tell you. RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 23 2008, 8:21 PM EST I have just started reading lady in the tower yesterday, I haven' t gotten very far in it but i really hope its as good as you say. I didn't really like robin maxwell's book it wasn't one of my favorites. there is a book by alison weir about all of his wives in one book that might be good for your friend to read then she could read about all of henry's wives at once. i enjoyed the book about catherine of aragon, like i said before im more interested in mary boleyn. i would love to write a book about her there isn't enough books out there about her. Good luck with your movie i hope it turns out good. I will deffently keep a look out for any books that might help ya out. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 24 2008, 5:23 AM EST Oh ye syou mean the six wives of Henry VIII by alison weir, yeah read that and thought it was superb. although antonia frasier's which I am reading well finish is also good. and thanks for helping me emsuepickle, all of you. thanks!!! and yeah you are right there are not enough books about Mary boleyn, and they should be after all she is the one who started both incidently and accidently the meetings with anne and henry, since she was the one who knew him first, and she is quite interesting, I have not read enough about her as my favorite about catherine or then anne, but I have found her to be an interesting character, and you are right she Mary needs to be further talked and investigated about. I suspect her children are also to be talked about, anyway thanks. oh and believe me you really will enjoy lady in the tower. Anyway ahve a good read, and good weekend, I will try to sleep have a big midterm tomorrow!! Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Ideas for novels to read?
Feb 25 2008, 9:02 AM EST Thankyou everyone for recommending various readings on the Tudors. I enjoy fact more than fiction, but do enjoy Phillipa Gregory despite thisI've read Allison Weir's books; she's great as is Antonia Frasier. I would be interested in reading "The Lady in the Tower" & "Plain Jane". Thanks! I find nothing on Mary Boleyn except for "The Other Boleyn Girl". Is there anything else???
