| MissBrit | Katherine of Aragon - was she really innocent? |

Many historians have different views on whether Katherine was a virgin when marrying Henry. She assured Henry she was as Arthur was "too ill" not long after they married. I think at the time Henry married her as he loved her, wanted her and her country as an ally against the French (at the time) and believed she was so. But when he became interested in Anne, he thought she was lying as I remember reading a quote from Henry that he had said something like "What, a hot blooded Tudor male?" when he was asked if he thought the marriage was consumated. If Katherine did lie, I think it was just a small white lie. But Henry used that to his advantage. So do you think she was innocent?

| MissBrit | Elizabeth I v Mary Queen of Scots - opinions of them? |

Elizabeth, it seems, did have some of her mother's attributes when it came to Mary, Queen of Scots, and although Elizabeth was a great queen, I do feel both Elizabeth and Mary were jealous of each other. Elizabeth had England, whereas Mary had married (3 times, but still) and a son. The fact that she signed the death warrant for Mary's execution was bad enough, as she was killing a queen. Mary was shown no mercy and beheaded with an axe, unlike Henry who did show Anne mercy, and allowed for her to have a quick execution with a sword. I have read Elizabeth adored her father, but little reference is made as to her opinion of her mother, but she was only 3 when Anne died, so I doubt she has many memories of her. I'm surprised she loved her father so, as he was responsible for Anne's execution.
Mary, herself didnt have a good start, marrying the French dauphin at a young age, who suddenly dies, and the French Queen quickly wants Mary gone. So she returns to Scotland, marries Darnley, who was gay, but had his child, James VI of Scotland, and also the future James I of England. Then there was a conspiracy about her being involved with his murder. Then she marries Bothwell, who had, "supposedly", abducted and raped her and forced her to marry him. Whilst being held prisoner by Elizabeth, she miscarries his twins. Elizabeth and Mary never met in all those years. I do feel a bit of sympathy for Mary, even though she was after Elizabeth;s crown. But I guess, in the end, in death, she won as her son became king....

Hey all-
Does anybody have suggestions for novels to read regarding the Tudor period? Actual novels, not biographies- novels like Phillpa Gregory or Alison Weir's "Innocent Traitor", or Jean Plaidy's novels. I like to read it with a little flair and dialogues! Suggestions are welcome! I want to read more. Thanks!

I'm bugged because the "historical inaccuracy" site has an inaccuracy. Katharine of Aragon DID have an English ancestor, but it was not Katharine of Lancaster. Her English ancestor was John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, 3rd son of Edward III. His second wife was Constance of Castile, whose parents were the deposed King and Queen of Castile. He married her to get a throne for himself and spent much of their 22 year marriage in fruitless efforts to regain it. They had one surviving child, a daughter named Catalina, who he married to the son of the "Pretender" King of Castile, making his daughter the Queen of Castile upon the death of the "Pretender". I'm skipping those names. Katherine of Aragon's English ancestor was therefore John of Lancaster. His 3rd wife was his life long mistress, Katherine Swynford. There is a '50s historical romance novel about her (and him) titled KATHERINE by Anya Seton and Alison Weir recently published a book in England titled KATHERINE SWYNFORD, which I'm just now finishing. The Plantagenets (the first being Henry II, married to Eleanor of Aquitaine), had reddish hair. Henry VII Tudor and his wife, Elizabeth of York (Henry VIII's parents), are both descended from John and his 3rd wife, Katherine, who had 4 "bastards", later legitimatized by the Pope and Richard II. Katherine Swynford, Duchess of Lancaster, would just "die" to read she is Katherine of Aragon's ancestress!!

I have gotten a charge out of Peter O'toole's portayal of Pope Paul III. This superb actor certainly has longevity and has acted in about 100 films.
Who can forget A Lion in Winter and Beckett? I think many on the set of Tudors are probably in awe of him.

Smeaton was not sleeping with Anne, but George. Thanks for the producers taking this subject on, and hopefully will get additional coverage - including more skin!

Okay she's not technically a Tudor (just a distant cousin) but I thought it might be worth while to start a thread about the new movie that's coming out (God only knows when). For those who haven't already heard the news from the grapevine, Scarlette Johanson has been cast as the starring role in "Mary, Queen of Scots". So far I've heard that the production has switched directors (from John Curran to Peter Noyce) and the majority of filming is to be done in Ireland! (just like the Tudors series) Has anybody else heard about the film? Please share info :)

I just love Natalie Dormer as Anne Boleyn. I believe she captures the coniving, opportunistic nature of Henry VIII's ill-fated second queen.
I don't think she was slutty or easy as some might suggest. On the contrary, she was tremendously talented in keeping Henry captivated for so long without succumbing to his advances. Her intellect, wit, and vivacity, if separated from her vicious temper, would have served her well as Henry's queen. Despite these faults and her eventual demise, she is my historical heroine. Her influence helped to change the religious and political tide in England, and consequently, in the New World.

When Moore and Fisher where killed the year where 1535 and thats true facts from history and it was the same in episode 5. Therefor I´m really disapointed and anoyed that they are dragging the heeding of the Anne Bitch Boleyn with not only one but two maybe 3 episodes when her heeding was, fact from the history, one year later 1536. In the first series things happend quick and quite fast but now things have changed and slowed down..........and I'm bothered with it. I really hope that things will move quicker like in series 1 and that they dont change the history to much. I cant wait untill
my countrywoman Anita Briem (Jane) brings her down. I didn't know that Elisabeth who ruled the golden years in England had such a bich for a mother !

I am new to the wiki, but I look forward to all the controversy when the new season comes out. I love the Tudors. I was reading Phillipa Gregory's The Other Boleyn girl and then Lo and behold they had made this drama that was On Demand. I watched the entire first season in one week. If you all are so in love with the show I highly suggest The Other Boleyn Girl, The Boleyn Inheritance, and the constant princess.

I have missed a few episodes, a couple from the end of last season and the first few from this season. This character is a man. He is by Queen Ann's side when she confesses her jealousy in the kings lovers. He comforts her , tells her he loves her, and kisses/ hugs her. please answer me this question anybody. How does he fit in. I guessed he was her brother but I can't remember what her brother looked like.

So, since we have a fabulous chatroom now, how would everyone feel if we tried to create a weekly "meeting?" I know we are all in different time zones, but we can map it out. So...I guess what we would do is list the time zone we are in, and the time that would work best for us?

I wonder why they never made any reference to Jane with Catherine or Anne earlier on as she was a servant to both queens?
