Anne Boleyn - Protagonist or Pawn?
The following was posted on page 2 of the Anne Boleyn profile and rather than muddy that up, I thought it might be good to start a thread on this subject here:
Anyone who did not agree to Henry's assumption as head of the Church of England or to Ann's daughter replacing the rightful heir, Mary Tudor, daughter of Katharine of Aragon, was sent to the block or the scaffold; she may not have actually sent them to their deaths, but her vengeful and petty machinations did. Among those were Thomas More, John Fisher, and many other clerics; she was responsible for the downfall of Thomas Wolsey, the King's friend and able counselor (unlike More and Fisher, Wolsey had no qualms of conscience in carrying out the King's will; he was just unfortunate enough to be unable to secure the divorce and to have incurred Ann's enmity.) When he fell out of love with Ann, Henry resented the loss of the friends and counselors that love of her had caused him to execute. She was also known to advocate the deaths of Queen Katharine and the Princess Mary. This woman was far from an angel. She just stepped over or on anyone who stood in her way.
In reply:
-It is simplistic to believe that Anne alone was responsible for the deaths of Wolsey, More & Fisher. The Tudor court politics was made up of factions of influential people who supported their patrons. More & Fisher were supportive of the catholic faction of Katherine and her daughter. They became collateral damage when the Boleyn faction which at the time was supported by Thomas Cromwell & the Protestants had the King's "ear". The reformation was advanced by their deaths. In turn Katherine's daughter Mary executed many many more during her reign.

Mary and Elizabeth
I was very moved by Mary's actions last night as she held her baby sister and sang to her it showed that she loved the child , even after all that has been done to this 17 yr old she still had it in her heart to not take it out on a child, I have read that Mary and Elizabeth where close and that Mary spoke well of her little sister saying she was a goodly child. I wondering how it will be on the show when they are both put into the same boat and lose there Father's love to there New step-mom and Edward

Mary Tudor - What-if
The poor woman died with barely 41 years of age. Even her mother lived ten years more than that.
What if Mary Tudor had lived longer and, equally importantly, had had offsprings with Philip II, son of the Emperor Charles V. Apparently Catholic feeling was still quite strong in these years before Elisabeth knocked it out completely. We could say that had her reign lasted longer that England would have been kept in the Catholic fold of nations. Several German dutchies and princendoms that went over to protestantism at one point later came back as reformed catholics, which could well have happened in England, moreso when even the protestant reform under the guidenace of the monarchy itself had been somewhat "light" compared to other north european nations. Different relations with the Spanish and Habsburg Empire, specially with the marriage and potential offsprings. Had Mary lived longer and had kept on having a Spanish Habsburg as husband we could see a different paper in the neatherland insurrection situation and possible unopposed and Spanish blessed English colonization of North America. The Thing becomes tricky if Mary and Philip had had kids. According to the marriage agreement, any offspring of their marriage would have inherited the English Kingdom, the whole Neatherlands and Flandern plus Burgundy. That would have made England again a continental power as in the days of Richard Lionheart. With his back freed from a neatherland war (Easily won without english support) and english piracy and warefare in the americas, Spain could have concentrated in throwing back the Turk from the Balcans through more help to the habsburg austrians and push through the mediterranean eastward.

Re Alison Weir's comments
i can understand Weir's dismay. I have just finished her "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" and I was looking at her notes and bibliography. Weir is very thorough. Each of her chapters has a corresonding section of sources in the back of the book. Her bibliograph is extensive. Even the photos she uses are cited as to origin. Although the book is written in the style of a popular biography, (meaning readable and interesting to the average person, vs the scholar - not a bad thing because people who would not read a biography couched in scholarly jargon will read the book and learn about the period) it was thoroughly researched and her sources cited. Weir uses both primary sources (i.e. The Spanish Calendar and the dispatches of Eustache Chapuys) and secondary sources (Authors of other biographies). Nevertheless this series should be enjoyed just for what it is, a royal soap opera, just as one would enjoy a novel about the period for its ability to transport us to another time and place. In some cases both ot these media lead us as they did me to research nonfiction sources for a truer picture of the period. One could for example, even research the dress of the period (an interesting study in itself) to check for historical accuracy in movie costumes. Obviously costumes were also a part of Weir's research. She certainly did her work.

Thank You :)
Just wanted to say thank you to all the members who are adding such great content to the Wiki. As time goes on the profiles and pages are getting pretty full which is great! However, because of that, I have started to make second pages because the first pages are so full they take a while to load. If you read "The Tudors Fan Wiki Guide" you will see that some people have smaller monitors and slower speed computer so we have to think of those people and make it easy for them to read. So its appreciated if you start using the second pages and in time it may move to 3 and 4 pages as the series progresses.
Thanks again!

Will Mary be featured in a more balanced perspective?
From the Tudors predictions page: The Reign of Mary I
In his film "Elizabeth", Michael Hirst's depiction of Mary as queen is less than flattering. Will Hirst feature Mary from a more balanced perspective by also showing her positive achievements as queen and personal side?
