What do you think about John Seymour?
"Edward, I'd say, and possibly Tom. As you say, historically John Seymour was out of the picture not long after Jane became Queen but, even if he hadn't, I'd say that they'd still go with the brother(s), if only to avoid a rehash of Thomas Boleyn." I agree, if someone will be the "new Thomas Boleyn" it will probably go to one or both of the Seymour brothers. Sir John hasn't come across as that scheming or sneaky as of yet. I think he will fade into the background. I have to give Nick Dunning kudos. When it comes to being ruthless, he's going to be hard to beat.

Jane Seymour: Before Henry
"I am curious to know about Jane's early years. I know she was in her mid-twenties before Henry took an interest in her. Was there ever anyone else romantically involved with Jane prior to Henry? Were there marriage negotiations, a courtship, anything? Seems so sad if all that she ever knew was a couple of years with Henry before her death, Thanks for all that read this and reply." Her faather, Sir John Seymour, was an able administrator and of the minor nobility. The Seymour family were the hereditary rangers of Savernake Forest. Their manor house, the 300-year-old Wulf Hall, was located on the outer reaches of the Forest. Sir John owned extensive lands and served as a Sheriff of Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset, as well as Justice of the Peace for Wiltshire. He had gone abroad on diplomatic missions on the King's behalf. Jane was a lady in waiting to Katharine of Aragon, and her friendship and loyalty to Katharine and her daughter Mary date from that period (the 1520s) Jane was 8 years older than the Princess Mary. She was 27 when she met Henry, as Weir comments, old to be unmarried at the period. There had at some unspecified time been proposed a marriage of Jane to William Dormer, which was rejected by the Dormer family on the basis of Jane's not being a good enough match, although from her mother's side she could claim ancestry from Edward III. It does not seem to have been a romance, but only an attempt at arranging an advantageous marriage. There were no known romances in Jane's past, one of the reasons no doubt, that her reputation for virtue remained intact. In 1533, after Katharine's exile, Jane became a lady in waiting to Anne Boleyn. At Christmas 1533, she was among several ladies to whom Henry gave gifts. Again, until she came to court, as a daugher (almost a spinster) of the minor nobility, there is sparse documentation of Jane's early life. I always felt sad that Queen Jane died during chlidbirth . Had she lived, Edward might have grown up to be a happier more extroverted person instead of the serious, dour young man he grew to be, and who knows, with his mother's love and oversight, he might have lived to be a great king. I also think that Jane would have restored Elizabeth, as she had Mary, to the King's favor if she had been granted a longer life.

Howard vs Seymour Faction - Which faction was the most powerful?
TudorTeacher, - what a great question! I am by no means an expert in this area, but since you have capped off the time period before Edward Seymour became Protector, I am going to go with the Howards for political influence. (I will let someone else tackle religion) I am going to side with the Earl of Surrey’s (Henry Howard) assessment of the Seymours, “Those saucy fellows that had crept into Court under their sister’s petticoats.” His petulant comment punctuates the rivalry between the two families perfectly – New wealth vs. Old wealth. The Howards were descended from the bloodline of Edward III. Surrey had an even better claim to the throne than the Tudors. If he had not flaunted his power in front of the king’s nose and been such a hothead then he might have saved his neck and put his family on the throne.
Norfolk (Thomas Howard) scares me. Now there’s a man that you don’t wan to meet in a dark ally. He displayed some Machiavellian ruthlessness when it came to controlling the people. For example, he had some creative ways of killing people…stringing their bodies up on trees in such. In the time period you have given, Henry couldn’t seem to manage without Norfolk. And the man even survives the Tower…Henry VIII croaked on the very day he was sentenced to die. What a life.
But the Seymours have more scandals! (my area of expertise). Sir John Seymour had an affair with his own daughter-in-law and had two children by her. Yucky. When Edward found out he sent his wife away to a convent and refused to recognize the children. I wonder if the The Tudors is going to touch on that scandal. It seems ripe for miniseries drama. Anyway, the Seymours' influence at court is fascinating too because nothing seemed to keep them down.
I would love to hear what other people think about the two families?
