Profile of : King Henry VIII as played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers
Motto: God & my Right

Born June 28, 1491 - Crowned April 23, 1509 - Died January 28, 1547
King Henry VIII - The Tudors Wiki Character's backstory: the third child and second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, born on June 28 1491. He was the first English monarch to be educated under the influence of the Renaissance, and his tutors included the poet Skelton. In his youth, Erasmus commented on his intelligence, and as second son, he studied to possibly enter the clergy. He became an excellent poet, scholar, linguist, athlete and musician.
Gentility: Tudor family
Position: Became King of England at 18 years old when his father died.
Personality type: Witty, talented & gregarious but also narcissistic, vain, egotistical & craved admiration.
He was very insecure & could brood and become sullen for days if disappointed. The first 20 years of his rule, he was a benevolent ruler. He became selfish, grandiose, melodramatic, malevolent & a hypochondriac in later years.
As he grew older, he became devious, vindictive, and autocratic. He beat Thomas Cromwell, his second chief minister, around the head and swore at him. He called Sir George Blagge, a gentleman of the king's Privy Chamber, 'my pig'.
Signature look: A charismatic presence. Grandly dressed & always reaching for excellence in appearance. Physically magnificent.
Endearing trait(s): Handsome, and he is... well... The King! "The Tudors" portray him much like a pop star of today. Full of enthusiasm and energy. Until around 1525, he was affable and willing to trust his counsellors.

Interests: included writing both books and music, and he was a lavish patron of the arts. An accomplished player of many instruments and a composer. He loved pomp and pageantry.
Annoying trait(s): Obsessed with producing an heir. As he grew older, he became devious, vindictive, and autocratic. By the end of the reign, Henry had deteriorated physically and mentally, becoming corpulent and immobile. He was a hypochondriac & became paranoid demanding service but proving impossible to serve.
A mass of contradictions and frustrations made him a conflicted and confused man.
Health: possibly severe uncontrolled diabetes, ulcers, dementia, STDs(?) Henry had a bout with malaria in 1521, at the age of 30. This was the beginning of his health maladies. He would later suffer from ulcers on both legs, a painful fistula from 1537, a lung blockage in 1542, dropsy and possibly syphilis. He would also get Tertian fever in 1541. This ailment resulted in severe attacks and increase in violent behaviour which would occur every other day. Tertian fever or ague was a malarial fever that made its host have hot and cold flashes and sweaty fits.

When are we going to see Henry get fat? He'd be porky - sorry - portly by now; this guy is like an adonis. Is he going to be one of these actors like Robert Deneiro or Toni Collette who gains 100 pounds for a role?

Ok even before this show started Jane seymour and the whole seymour clan has just pist me off!!!!! Jane is not but a blonde Katherine who is being tutored by her brother and father in Anne's lessons. Jane is the one wife that rubs me wrong. She is considered (by many and henry himself being as he was buried beside her) to be the true wife ONLY because she is the only one that gave him a living son... ONE BIRTH!! IT makes me so mad that it took Elizabeth to make people believe that women can be used for more then sex objects!!! The only heir of Henrys that amounted to anything was that of nan boyeln...the witch. Can noone but me see irony? It makes me so angry that people want to put this women down when she was the mother (one half!!!) of the greatest monarch england has ever and will ever see! Henry was a spolied child who cared not more anyone but himself, two good women were lost because of him.. katherine and anne. Jane but herself in harms way(well her family but her there)... Anne of cleves was lucky!! we all know that....little catherine was but a child and should of never been used as she was. I grieve for Henrys wives...those who only did what was comanded of them...but Anne touches me heart and soul...and till my end of days she will be a guiding light...a strong women who if put in our time would put us all to shame with her wit and deteremination.

Holly2 What Did Henry Want To Hear... 15 Jul 19 2008, 5:20 AM EDT by Impish_Impulse

...when he gave instructions for an investigation into Anne’s behaviour? Do you think that he wanted to hear that she was guilty, so that he would be able to get rid of her and marry Jane Seymour with a clear conscience or would he have preferred to be reassured that she had never betrayed him in any way?

He certainly leapt on the idea – one mention of possible misconduct on Anne’s part from Brandon and he immediately orders a full scale investigation instead of placing a discreet watch on her or something, to quietly see if there was any reason to doubt her fidelity before taking it any further – but, at the same time, his distress at learning of Anne’s supposed betrayal seemed genuine to me.

Imagine if Cromwell, at the last minute, either had an attack of conscience or decided that he was better off with Anne than without her, that he refrained from torturing a confession out of poor Mark Smeaton and reported the truth; that there was no evidence that Anne had ever slept with anyone else or that she had ever had plans to. How do you think Henry would have reacted?

What I've always found so ironic throughout the Monarchy is that a woman is deemed worthless if SHE cannot produce a male heir. If they had known back then that the male determines the sex of the child; how many women would have been spared or what would have been done differently? Would there be any consequence for him not being able to give a male heir?

MissBrit Henry VIII's Obsession with a Male Heir 19 Jul 8 2008, 2:28 PM EDT by Boudica

If Henry was so obsessed with getting a male heir, couldn't he have just said Bessie Blount's son was now in line to the throne? And what about Mary Boleyn's son Henry Carey, who many thought was Henry VIII's son? I know it was regarded as "treason", but if Henry was able to leave Rome and do all of that, couldn't he do that as well?
