| born 1473 - died 25 August 1554 Character's backstory:Son of the 2nd Duke of Norfolk, brother to Elizabeth Howard and brother in law to Sir Thomas Boleyn, Earl of Wiltshire (Anne Boleyn consort Queen father). He distinguished himself many times in battle, and was an able soldier. Gentility: Nobleman Position: 2nd. Earl of Surrey, Lord High Admiral, Lord High Treasurer and Earl Marshal Personality type: Ambitious and rather insensitive to others. He was conservative, unimpressed with the new ideas of reformers and uncomfortable with the low born "new men" of the Tudor Court.Only went alongside reformers or any religion that would bring him power and wealth, when he no longer had use to it he turned back to his old and staunchly way.He never gives up! Always strong in his convictions, like his niece he believes all he is doing is for the welfare of his family even if he hurts them. He believes his word is absolute, if he says something he will stick by it! Signature look: Conservative Endearing trait(s): The Venetian ambassador in 1531 described him as 'prudent, liberal, affable and astute: associates with everybody, has very great experience in political government, discusses the affairs of the world admirably, aspires to greater elevation , and bears ill-will to foreigners...small and spare in person, his hair is black...' Annoying trait(s): Selfish and untrustworthy. Puts his own security before family loyalties. Arrogant, little caring of Boleyns and little caring also of what his actions might cause to the families and welfare of others, just as long as it causes the advancement of men and people related to him by friendship or by money. Scandal(s): His affair with the maid, Bess Holland, caused an estrangement with his wife. The marriage was unhappy, allegedly because the duke showed off about his betrayal with his wife's maid, Bess Holland, and savagely beat her when she protested. After his niece Katherine Howard was beheaded, numerous other Howards were imprisoned in the Tower - including the duke's stepmother, brother, two sisters-in-law and numerous servants. He thus fell out of favour with King & despite desperate efforts to heal the rift, he was arrested along with his son Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey and charged with treason. Henry VIII died the day before the execution was due to take place, and Norfolk's sentence was commuted to imprisonment. His son was less fortunate and had been executed a few days previously. He was imprisoned in the Tower all through Edward's reign and released by Mary when she took the throne. He died a year later. | Want to add to this profile? Click EasyEdit to update this page!
