As I stated in another thread, I`m currently reading John Schofield`s biography of Thomas Cromwell, and have just finished reading about the fall of Anne Boleyn and her faction. I always assumed that the story about Smeaton`s torture with the knotted rope was true. Its` mentioned in several places, shown in just about every film adaptation of the period and really, took it at face value. However, according to the Schofield biography, the only evidence of this comes from the Spanish Chronicle, and isn`t mentioned anywhere else. The same Spanish Chronicle also claims Cromwell was pivotal in the downfall of Katherine Howard, that Anne of Cleves was Henry`s fifth wife and numerous other `howlers` (as Schofield calls them).
This is one of the key reasons why Cromwell has been portrayed as a blood stained monster for the last 500 years, and now it turns out it is almost certainly a fabrication. My mind is clean amazed, as Cranmer would say. I`m sorry for starting a seemingly pointless thread about this, but its` a very interesting point, and something that needs to be taken into consideration before the vilification of Cromwell is continued. |

Hey everyone
Inspired by the threadjack to end all threadjacks, Team Cromwell has decided to attempt to harness the madness (a little) and cash in on the creativity/insanity of its members. The very basic score is that this will be a contributory story that imagines an alternative path to Cromwell’s unfortunate end, where he escapes the tender head-chopping mercies of his crazy King and heads off to a life of unknown adventures. Where will his new life take him? Who on earth will he meet? And will he ever find something to wear that isn’t black? YOU decide…muahaha. All Team members are encouraged to contribute their own parts to the story, and non-members are free to join in if they wish. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask. I suck at instructions, and this is probably as clear as mud :D I’ve written a seriously clunky introductory scene-setter, which is rubbish because I was scribbling it in-between trying to do coursework. The idea of starting this off in the Tower was donated by Reggie (and then stolen by me).
Do you find this valuable?

So, it's been about a month since Cromwell's demise. How's everyone dealing with it?
