History has not been kind to Mary I, not since Richard III
has a monarch been so consistently vilified
in popular media - especially when compared to her Protestant half-siblings or her cousin Lady Jane Grey.

"Elizabeth" written by Michael Hirst

- as Mary I is portrayed

Mary Tudor Kathy Burke as Queen Mary in Elizabeth (1998) Mary is portrayed as a hunched backed, ugly, bitter woman
Mary Tudor
Gwen Davies as Mary in Tudor Rose (1936) Again Mary is an old and frightening woman compared to Jane Grey who is lovely by comparison. Mary is portrayed as self-righteous and unsympathetic in her decision to execute her cousin (historically she was).

Illustration from Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper" where Tom Candy (Edward VI's pauper) tells "the grimly holy Lady Mary" that she is banished to her closet and "beseech God to take away that stone that was in her breast and give her a human heart" Comments: Even to this day new ideas and illustration "renaissance" "fashion" ideas are always the fashion, the MUST DO, the GOOD and Catholics like Mary are the BAD, although her half-brothers also did injustices to the Catholic faction as well as Mary did to the protestant, yet this is never mention, we like to see a world in black and white, in reality maybe that is how we want to live ever since the birth of a religion which paint us the world in black and white, even science can do the same, we always look for the extreme good and extreme bad, and in the end that is how we want to be, bias.

Mary Tudor
Queen Mary, as played by Jane Lapotaire, in Lady Jane (1986) is depicted as one of the villains of the story because of her role in sentencing the execution of Lady Jane Grey (Helena Bonham Carter) and Guilford Dudley (Cary Elwes) who are celebrated as ill-fated, young lovers (in reality they were not happily married as the movie romantically version sets them out to be and set out Mary to be evil when in reality perhaps she is the more human figure of all). Mary's rise to power is depicted in the film as the beginning of a dark time for England.

Mary I and Princess Elizabeth
Comments; a bit more even handed, but still casts Mary as an unsuccessful queencompared to Elizabeth to which some of the more educated public who feels that to put Mary in black and white compared to her father and sister is to have a retarded, backwards opinion, some prefer a gray opinion that the backwards opinion of black and white. Mary was in the end a Queen who was biased like those (quite ironic) who misjudged her were biased, she could not have the support because most of the great people, intelligent people who had the malice and had what it took of great genius, like those who helped her sister administer the states, Mary did not have that, the only thing she had were staunch Catholics who cared more about power than religion, unlike Mary who cared not more about power, but to her duty to God. For every 10 Mary killed , modernist, post modernist, feminist, Conservatives, Protestant, and many more argue she is not to be represented in the end that is how we want it to be, a bias world for an unsuccessful Queen.
Queen Mary I - Historical profile - The Tudors Wiki
An independant docu-drama of the life of Mary. While some parts are over sensationalized, it gives equal time to Mary's childhood and adult years in an attempt to explain the Queen she became. Miranda French, Elizabeth Rees, and Natalia Plenlazek (right to left) all play Mary.

Marion Day
Marion Day in "The Royal Diaries: Elizabeth"
This program is geared for young readers of the Royal Diaries book series by Scholastic Books. In it, Mary is portrayed as a wicked stepsister and erroneously is shown plotting the downfall of Catherine Parr (though they did not share the same religion they did get along).
Nicola Pagett
Nicola Pagett in "Anne of a Thousands Day"
Mary's role was minimal in the film. Mary was also wrongly portrayed as being at her mother beside when Katherine died.
Constance Stride
Constance Stride in "The Other Boleyn Girl"
Mary's role short, appearing in the beginning of the movie. The movie inaccurately shows Mary at her mother's side after she delivers a stillborn infant.

I have never seen The Virgin Queen but after seeing those photos of Mary and Elizabeth together I have to say that Mary was the prettier sister(about time)Elizabeths hairline is receeding, her face is too pale and gaunt considering she was the younger sister and she had wrinkles a plenty.
