Princess Mary Tudor - The Tudors WikiCharacter's backstory:The only surviving child of Queen Katherine of Aragon & King Henry VIII. If she had been born a boy, history could have been so different. As it was, she started out as a much doted on child only to be relegated to illegitimacy when her father decided to annul the marriage with her mother.

Gentility: Royal Tudor Family, granddaughter of King Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of Castille

Position: Princess of Wales (later revoked and retitled as Lady Mary) and much later - Queen of England and Ireland, Queen Consort of Aragon, Castile and Naples, Queen Consort of the Spanish Netherlands

Personality type: A precocious child and doted on by her father who bragged that "this child never cries". Her parents divorce and the birth of her half sister & brother left her emotionally insecure for the rest of her life.

Signature look:
Red hair, blue eyes, light pale skin, although later because of her adversity, her skin would get paler and by the time she was a teen and young adult, she is described to have been thin. Although described by some as looking ill-tempered, the result of her "squinty" eyes was poor eyesight.

Endearing trait(s):
By her teens and young years she is said to have been kind, even as an adult she is said to have cared and loved her brother and sister, despite being from different mothers, She was intelligent, had a passion for music, loved to read & taught Latin, Spanish, English, French and other languages by her tutors.
She never gave up on religion or turned back on her beliefs.

Annoying trait(s):Very patient, never talked back or had the courage to go against her father, unlike her mother.

Scandal(s): Marian Persecutions

Nickname(s): Bloody Mary

Site of burial:
Westminster Abbey, buried alongside her half-sister Elizabeth I, The tomb topped by an effiigy of Elizabeth I bears the epitaph : "Consorts both in throne and grave, here rest we two sisters, Elizabeth and Mary in the hope of one resurrection".
Official Guidebook, Westminster Abbey, pg. 30

Comments:
Mary was isolated from her mother, and mostly friendless as well as being an English subject, which Katherine of Aragon was not. If Henry did harm to Katherine, the Emperor Charles V,V, her nephew might have used that as a pretext for making war on England. It was fear of this as well as the fact that Katherine was a princess of the royal family of Spain that stayed his hand against her. Mary did not have these advantages. So always lived in fear of her life while her father lived.
