"All of what I have read always pointed to Mary being sickly since she was born, after being born a small child that almost didn't survive as well. The only child of Henry's that thrived after being born was Henry Fitzroy and Elizabeth (along with his first son but he only lived a month so he couldn't have been that healthy) the others tended to all be on the weaker side." No, Mary was miraculously healthy from what i read, given the time she was born, her parents were thankful for that much at the least, especially Henry because he saw that himself and Katherine could have a healthy child, not just because she lived. People consider her to be a sickly child because she was quite slim, and short in height, in other words, didn't appear to be capable of bearing children. But that hardly means she was sick, she suffered dreadful menstruation cycles, which can cause migraines as Ellie suggested (but considering someone once made a remark about Mary being shortsighted, that could have been the cause of her headaches too, no glasses!). But when her parents seperated, that's when Mary's health started to dwindle, as a result of stress, major stress, i would imagine!

Very Interesting, Ellie. But I'd always thought Norfolk hated Crum both because of his religious incline and because he'd arranged the marriage w/Cleves. Approximately when was that letter/dinner invite? Does your source provide any dates? Just wondering if Norfolk had the idea to trap Crum as Crum trapped Smeaton. Norfolk also thought of Crum as an upstart , one of the 'new men' w/no family or background trying to become like a noble. This was around the same time as Henry wanted Anne gone to marry Jane. He seemed to loathe the idea of these new men, except for Cranmer. Cranmer came from a good background, a good family, so Norfolk didn't view him in the same light he viewed Crum. I don't think his being a chaplain to the Boleyns had anything to do w/Norfolks admiration. As for Wolsey, I think everyone from the Pope down to the scullery maid knew his ambitions to be the Pontiff. And everyone also thought Henry would tire of Anne, so they all tried to delay any decisions about his marriage to KOA. Wolsey's promise to attain the divorce just wasn't going to happen and he should have known better than to promise Henry he'd get the divorce. Wolsey tried stalling, and the Pope tried stalling, it only brought about Henry's ire and Anne's dismay of Wolseys real intentions. Her derogatory remarks certainly did give Henry pause, especially as the years drew on and no divorce was coming. No one Imo, could have attained that divorce from Aragon unless the situation w/Spain in Rome hadn't happened or KOA gave in. Wolsey doomed himself when he promised Henry he'd get him free of KOA, whether or not the seat in the Vatican became available. Wolsey had already been turned down twice for Pope. The bribes weren't large enough or, it could have been that he wasn't of noble family. Being a butcher's son did have it's disadvantages.
Peace, ETR

"The arguements you make here are very good. This, though, does not preclude her from having had an affair. She may or may not be guilty of adultery.
As you said, she was very young, and she may or may not have complete faith in confessions - we have to remember that there were probably many closet non-confirmists in that age. I am just running wild here though. There is no evidence for that. This issue has always interested me. I wonder what really happened!\
And oh yea - Norfolk was an ***hole!" Oh, i'm certainly not saying its imposible she could have had an affair, i just think its unfair to judge her on that basis, when we don't know, all we can do is assume. As for the point you made about her age, in relation to her faith, i don't think it made a difference back then. Religion was the most important thing to these people, so its difficult for me to believe that Kathryn wouldn't adhere to her faith, especially at her time of dying. All we can do is wonder, just like we're left to wonder about Anne Boleyn and Wyatt *deep sigh*!

It will truly be sad to see Henry go. We have followed him for so long, and I think we all have a soft spot for him, despite his temper and all he has done. It will be heart-breaking when he dies, but it has to happen.

They should definetly give some kind of glimps into the future. Though I think it should be more indirectly. But still it could be fun if Henry had a dream about something that was going to happen, something the audience know about. And then Henry should misunderstand it. That would be fun, but very silly and unlikely.

The religious leanings of Mary and Edward would be a good idea to include to show how their relationship would be later when Edward became king. And also Elizabeth's leanings would be a good idea to show a middleway between her two rather extreme siblings. Mary was an extreme Catholic and Edward was an extreme Protestant.

Of course there have been times in the show, such as Jane's death and his conflict over Moore's death that some, me included, have felt sympathy for him. But after reading well-wriitten posts of the very kind Nobelman in Tights who is a featured extra on the show I'm getting the feeling that Henry won't go roaring to his deathbed. I'm guessing he'll be a royal terror after he kills wife #5 but will become rather settled in a quiet relationship with wife 6 in a way that will soften some feelings towards him.

So MDK and Annabelle Wallis have both been sited on set this season. This apparently is similar to Shakespeare's 'Henry VIII' play at the end with his past wives? I'm familiar with some of the acts, but what is the Shakespeare ending being mentioned in "Extra" thread?

I love love the show to end that way, but I can't help thinking that it would the actresses (or actors) make a long way to Ireland just to shoot at most one and only episode... Anyway, the news of MDK and AW being on the set make me hoping! I just keep my fingers crossed that each wife has her time of "spooky vengeance" towards Henry! lol! That would be mind-blowing! The best way to end a show with so many powerful characters as the Tudors had IMO: to give them a last bow... I would actually love to see Wolsey, More and Crommy back as well but even just the wives would be awesome!

"hmmm, that is a SPECTACULAR question, caroline! just a hunch--rape will be included." Yes, you would think that Hirst will put it in there because a) it is one of 'those' scenes which they think every one watches it for and b) because well they made it up for George & Jane Boleyn, why not let Thomas who was said to have done it to do it as well! But rape is a sensitive issue to some people, especially those who are victims of it, so they will have to handle it carefully, especially as Henry let him off scot free.

As series 3 was more accurate than the previous two, I think they will stick to the truth, more or less, and have Brandon die suddenly (heart attack? stroke?) shortly before Henry. Having lost his best friend, Henry will then realise how lonely he is and look back over his life

One of Catherine Parr's friends was a young woman who shared her faith to the point that she was burned at the stake for it...not only that but has the ignominious fame of being the only woman who was tortured in the tower before her execution by the infamous Richard Rich. It will be interesting to see if she is portrayed next season.
Can any of us imagine being a young woman who had the fortitude to undergo torture and not implicate the queen ( unlike poor Mark Smeaton) and further those who witnessed her execution (including Lady Jane Grey) were impressed by her bravery, and many witnesses reported that throughout the long execution she did not scream until the flames reached her chest whereas the 3 men burned with her cried out from the first touch of the fire.

RE: Will Anne Askew be portrayed?
By: ,
Aug 11 2009, 3:18 PM EDT
"You're confusing Innocent Traitor with history. Anne Askew wasn't a friend of Caherine Parr's, she was a commoner who was tossed out by her husband for her Protestant beliefs. Several of Catherine's ladies visited Anne when she was in prison, but there was no other evidence linking Catherine to Anne. There is also no evidence that Lady Jane Grey witnessed Anne's execution, as Alison Weir portrays in the novel. Alison Weir says as much at the back of the book. That said, I hope they do portray give Anne Askew as much attention as they did the "leader" of the Pilgramage of Grace." I believe most historians have speculated that because Anne's sister Jane was married to George Saint Paul who was not only also a protestant but also a friend of Charles Brandon and his own outspoken wife Catherine Willoughby/Brandon and Lady-in-waiting to the queen that there was a link to Catherine Parr since they shared similar beliefs. Anne Askew was, what was considered a "gentlewoman" and she did have access at one point to the outer court circle, even mentioning that she had seen the king on this throne. Bishop Gardiner more than likely hoped she would somehow incriminate the queen because he disliked her and Catherine Brandon for their protestant sympathies. However Anne died without betraying the queen or any of her ladies. Whatever Catherine Parr's relationship to the young woman was, she could not have been pleased to see her die so horrible a death for beliefs with which she sympathized. Henry at this point had begun to dislike Catherine Parr's protestant ways and there was talk of Henry divorcing her and Bishop Gardiner was ever watchful of an opportunity to get rid of her. It was very dangerous for Catherine to in any way show that she was a "friend" of Anne Askew but the speculation is that there was a link through Catherine Brandon.
