"All of what I have read always pointed to Mary being sickly since she was born, after being born a small child that almost didn't survive as well. The only child of Henry's that thrived after being born was Henry Fitzroy and Elizabeth (along with his first son but he only lived a month so he couldn't have been that healthy) the others tended to all be on the weaker side." No, Mary was miraculously healthy from what i read, given the time she was born, her parents were thankful for that much at the least, especially Henry because he saw that himself and Katherine could have a healthy child, not just because she lived. People consider her to be a sickly child because she was quite slim, and short in height, in other words, didn't appear to be capable of bearing children. But that hardly means she was sick, she suffered dreadful menstruation cycles, which can cause migraines as Ellie suggested (but considering someone once made a remark about Mary being shortsighted, that could have been the cause of her headaches too, no glasses!). But when her parents seperated, that's when Mary's health started to dwindle, as a result of stress, major stress, i would imagine!

Very Interesting, Ellie. But I'd always thought Norfolk hated Crum both because of his religious incline and because he'd arranged the marriage w/Cleves. Approximately when was that letter/dinner invite? Does your source provide any dates? Just wondering if Norfolk had the idea to trap Crum as Crum trapped Smeaton. Norfolk also thought of Crum as an upstart , one of the 'new men' w/no family or background trying to become like a noble. This was around the same time as Henry wanted Anne gone to marry Jane. He seemed to loathe the idea of these new men, except for Cranmer. Cranmer came from a good background, a good family, so Norfolk didn't view him in the same light he viewed Crum. I don't think his being a chaplain to the Boleyns had anything to do w/Norfolks admiration. As for Wolsey, I think everyone from the Pope down to the scullery maid knew his ambitions to be the Pontiff. And everyone also thought Henry would tire of Anne, so they all tried to delay any decisions about his marriage to KOA. Wolsey's promise to attain the divorce just wasn't going to happen and he should have known better than to promise Henry he'd get the divorce. Wolsey tried stalling, and the Pope tried stalling, it only brought about Henry's ire and Anne's dismay of Wolseys real intentions. Her derogatory remarks certainly did give Henry pause, especially as the years drew on and no divorce was coming. No one Imo, could have attained that divorce from Aragon unless the situation w/Spain in Rome hadn't happened or KOA gave in. Wolsey doomed himself when he promised Henry he'd get him free of KOA, whether or not the seat in the Vatican became available. Wolsey had already been turned down twice for Pope. The bribes weren't large enough or, it could have been that he wasn't of noble family. Being a butcher's son did have it's disadvantages.
Peace, ETR

"The arguements you make here are very good. This, though, does not preclude her from having had an affair. She may or may not be guilty of adultery.
As you said, she was very young, and she may or may not have complete faith in confessions - we have to remember that there were probably many closet non-confirmists in that age. I am just running wild here though. There is no evidence for that. This issue has always interested me. I wonder what really happened!\
And oh yea - Norfolk was an ***hole!" Oh, i'm certainly not saying its imposible she could have had an affair, i just think its unfair to judge her on that basis, when we don't know, all we can do is assume. As for the point you made about her age, in relation to her faith, i don't think it made a difference back then. Religion was the most important thing to these people, so its difficult for me to believe that Kathryn wouldn't adhere to her faith, especially at her time of dying. All we can do is wonder, just like we're left to wonder about Anne Boleyn and Wyatt *deep sigh*!
