King Henry VIII as played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers

Born June 28, 1491 - Crowned April 23, 1509 - Died January 28, 1547
King Henry VIII - The Tudors Wiki Character's backstory: the third child and second son of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, born on June 28 1491. He was the first English monarch to be educated under the influence of the Renaissance, and his tutors included the poet Skelton. In his youth, Erasmus commented on his intelligence, and as second son, he studied to possibly enter the clergy. He became an excellent poet, scholar, linguist, athlete and musician.
Gentility: Tudor family
Position: Became King of England at 18 years old when his elder brother Arthur died.
Personality type: Witty, talented & gregarious
but also narcissistic, vain, egotistical & craved admiration.
He was very insecure & could brood and become sullen for days if disappointed.
-a French Ambassador in Rome stated that the King was
"a youngling [who] cares for nothing but girls and hunting and wastes his father's patrimony"
The first 20 years of his rule, he was a benevolent ruler. One of his contemporary's said he was "one of the goodliest men that lived in his time, in manners more than a man, most amiable, courteous and benign in gesture unto all persons".

He became selfish, grandiose, melodramatic, malevolent & a hypochondriac in later years.
Signature look: A charismatic presence. Grandly dressed & always reaching for excellence in appearance. Physically magnificent.
The Venetian ambassador, Sebastian Giustiniani, described Henry in 1519 as: 'extremely handsome.
Nature could not have done more for him. He is much handsomer than any other sovereign in Christendom;
a great deal handsomer than the King of France; very fair and his whole frame admirably proportioned.
On hearing that Francis I wore a beard, he allowed his own to grow, and as it is reddish, he has now got
a beard that looks like gold.'
and
"His Majesty is the handsomest potentate I ever set eyes on; above the usual height, with an extremely
fine calf to his leg, his complexion very fair and bright, auburn hair combed straight and short, in the
French fashion, and a round face so very beautiful that it would become a pretty woman, his throat
being rather long and thick.... He will enter his twenty-fifth year the month after next. He speaks French, English and Latin, and a little Italian, plays well on the lute and harpsichord, sings from book at sight, draws the bow with
greater strength than any man in England and jousts marvelously.... a most accomplished Prince. "
the Venetian diplomat Pasqualigo in a dispatch, 1515
He would later become balding and obese.
Endearing trait(s): Handsome, and he is... well... The King! "The Tudors" portray him much like a pop star of today. Full of enthusiasm and energy.
Until around 1525, he was affable and willing to trust his counsellors.Historical accounts by an observer of the young Henry say: he was athletic and highly intelligent.
"He speaks good French, Latin and Spanish; is very religious; heard three masses daily when he hunted...
He is extremely fond of hunting, never takes that diversion without tiring eight or ten horses...
He is also fond of tennis."

Interests: included writing both books and music, and he was a lavish patron of the arts. An accomplished player of many instruments and a composer. He loved pomp and pageantry.
Annoying trait(s): Obsessed with producing an heir. As he grew older, he became devious, vindictive, and autocratic. He beat Thomas Cromwell, his second chief minister, around the head and swore at him.
He called Sir George Blagge, a gentleman of the king's Privy Chamber, 'my pig'.
By the end of the reign, Henry had deteriorated physically and mentally, becoming corpulent and immobile.
He was a hypochondriac & became paranoid demanding service but proving impossible to serve.
A mass of contradictions and frustrations made him a conflicted and confused man.
Health: possibly severe uncontrolled diabetes, ulcers, dementia, STDs(?) Henry had a bout with malaria in 1521, at the age of 30. This was the beginning of his health maladies. He would later suffer from ulcers on both legs, a painful fistula from 1537, a lung blockage in 1542, dropsy and possibly syphilis. He would also get Tertian fever in 1541. This ailment resulted in severe attacks and increase in violent behaviour which would occur every other day. Tertian fever or ague was a malarial fever that made its host have hot and cold flashes and sweaty fits.

Henry VIII

Comments:
A Tyrant or manipulated by court factions?
Historians are at odds on this question. A.F. Pollard whose biography came out in 1902 portrayed Henry as a ruler of blood & iron who dominated wives, ministers & political institutions.

Sir Geoffrey Elton whose interpretation came out in 1955 said that Henry VIII was a weak man who needed his ministers, and especially Thomas Cromwell who was the architect of the break with Rome and of an administrative revolution in the 1530s, without which Henry would have lost his way.

In 1977, Elton revised his thesis to accommodate Dr David Starkey's studies of faction and the 'inner politics' of the court and privy chamber in his final text-book, Reform and Reformation. Court faction, rather than an administrative revolution, was regarded as the main force during the reign and thus Henry was less a weak man than a King who was manipulated.

"Whether Henry VIII's rule was tyrannical is a question that was raised by More's execution, and will always be debated. Diarmaid MacCulloch has recently said that Henry's vision of himself as an 'arbitrator' in the Church of England could turn into a 'murderous paranoia', as in 1539 when he burned three evangelical preachers and three papalist Catholics on the same day in order to demonstrate his 'impartiality' to the European powers.

The case for and against Henry VIII can be argued from several viewpoints. He was a supreme egotist, who sometimes allowed passion and not reason to govern his actions, but he was also one of the most effective and remarkable rulers to sit on the English throne. He was feared and revered in his own lifetime. His life and legacy will continue to be re-evaluated and to exert a powerful fascination on historians and general readers alike." [source: Encarta]

On Henry's deathbed, do you think he had any regrets about the way he treated his wives and children? I've seen/read various things about what he did on his deathbed, some said he called out for Jane, one was something about monks, and another was something he tells his son Edward about what he had to do as King. Edward said "have a son" and Henry said "no, be happy."

Does anyone know more than I do on this if he regretted any of his actions in life? Or what your opinions are?

When are we going to see Henry get fat? He'd be porky - sorry - portly by now; this guy is like an adonis. Is he going to be one of these actors like Robert Deneiro or Toni Collette who gains 100 pounds for a role?

Did Henry have any affair with Mary Boleyn and she have a boy, did the boy die?
Did all of this happen before Anne Boleyn's affair and becoming Queen?
The daughter that Anne had was Elizabeth and I assume she became Queen Elizabeth and that Henery never had a son that live past infancy?
