MEMORABLE QUOTES

  • "Put me in a costume and I'm your man. I must have one of those faces which seems to suit period drama more than modern films and TV programmes. But I'm not complaining, I love going back in time. I feel quite lucky because nobody knows who I am. I can walk about and have ordinary conversations with people. Can you imagine what it's like if people are always asking about your next role? That must be a nightmare. But if I get desperate I might start walking about with a wig on, or a codpiece, saying, 'Remember this?'....Playing characters who are wonderful and beautiful is hard because you don't feel like that most of the time...well, I don't.It's like this whole heart-throb nonsense. It's flattering but that's not how I feel in the morning. It's something that goes with the job." [Sunday Mail August 24, 2008]

  • I really don't think I'm the kind of actor who could cope with hordes of women throwing themselves at my feet.(Company Magazine 2000)

  • Risk is great; you’ve got to take risks or life gets too predictable.

  • I don’t think anyone should grovel - they’re lucky to have you. You’ve got to believe in yourself.
CURIOUS FACTS

  • plays guitar, violin and harmonica and writes his own songs. He takes his guitar with him everywhere.
  • prefers to travel by train rather than by air, even if the trip takes days.

It is a story of an innocent girl, a child of humble family, but a natural nobility taken advantage of by a cad. Hans Mathisen has the role of Alec D'Urberville. Unfortunately Mathisen is the cad, but he is very good in the role. The photography is lucious.Beginning January 5th and for a limited time, you can watch the first half if you missed it tonight online on the PBS website. The film is also available for purchase online. The final episode will air next Sunday ( 9 PM PST) Check the local listings for your time zone.
