"yeah but the King always has a huge fireplace being kept stoked at all times so I don't think he had a problem with the heating aspect. As JRM himself said, there was probably more sex than today because they had very little entertainment. Printing was in its early stages so books were not plentiful to read plus with no electricity or eyeglasses, reading after dark was pretty difficult. No TV, no computers...nothing ....So after dark things were pretty quiet. What else were they going to get up to? "

I am tempted to say that the fireplace wasn't the only thing being stoked...but yes, when the King was in his own palaces (particularly the new and remodelled ones), it was probably warm enough. Less so, I think, when when he was on progress. There must have an element of 'make and do' then, although they would have carted tapestries, bed hangings and the like with them in order to improve comfort and warmth.

But it was colder then than now, sometimes known as 'the little ice age' - the Thames periodically froze over, and there are all those Brueghel paintings of folk doing winter sports. There were probably times when Henry grabbed the girl, stripped off quick, and burrowed under the furry bedcover! But that would be less telegenic...
