As I stated in another thread, I`m currently reading John Schofield`s biography of Thomas Cromwell, and have just finished reading about the fall of Anne Boleyn and her faction. I always assumed that the story about Smeaton`s torture with the knotted rope was true. Its` mentioned in several places, shown in just about every film adaptation of the period and really, took it at face value. However, according to the Schofield biography, the only evidence of this comes from the Spanish Chronicle, and isn`t mentioned anywhere else. The same Spanish Chronicle also claims Cromwell was pivotal in the downfall of Katherine Howard, that Anne of Cleves was Henry`s fifth wife and numerous other `howlers` (as Schofield calls them).
This is one of the key reasons why Cromwell has been portrayed as a blood stained monster for the last 500 years, and now it turns out it is almost certainly a fabrication. My mind is clean amazed, as Cranmer would say. I`m sorry for starting a seemingly pointless thread about this, but its` a very interesting point, and something that needs to be taken into consideration before the vilification of Cromwell is continued.

My copy of John Schofield`s biography of Cromwell arrived yesterday! My friend picked it up for me today so i`m not very far along with it. But so far its` been really good. Schofield seems to really understand Cromwell, and finally, we`re getting an even handed and understanding factual portrait of the great man. Has anyone else here read it?

I think the wives from "the tudors" are fairer than the wives from "the six wives of henry viii"; the wives from "the six wives of henry viii", are closer to the real wives, though.

I'm currently reading Joanna Denny's biography of Anne Boleyn and I am shocked at the way she has such a bee in her bonnet over KOA.!! I admire both Katherine and Anne for different reasons but the way Denny is going on Anne was the darling of the Protestant reformation and KOA was just a spiteful vindictive bitter old crone! I don't think i have read a more biased biography. Has anyone read it and what were your thoughts?

Does anyone know if there are going to be new forth coming Tudor/ Elizabethan films or tv series coming out soon?
I have been searching the web trying to find articles on The Constant Princess, The Boleyn Inheritance and Innocent Traitor, which were all reputed to be getting made into films or a tv series, does anyone know any thing about this? I love this period of history, and love to watch films and series about this period, but there is not that many around. I dont like films that were made years and years ago, the farthest back I can go is probably late 80's, I hate things made in the 70's and before that, so does anyone know of any films/series, set in this period made after the 80's? I've seen Lady Jane, Elizabeth, Shakespeare In Love, The Other Boleyn Girl, any other suggestions?

Greetings All!
My BF found this game on one of the many game sites on the net. He used iWinGames.com. Just google the name and a list should come up. You have to join the site and download it to play. It's pretty easy, and the title page has lists of other games that are available for free and for sale. You can just type in The Tudors Video Game in google too, and you'll find all the game sites that have it. I'll send a link as soon as I figure out how, lol! If any of you try the game, tell us here what you think or if you enjoyed it. I thought it was pretty cool the way the pics of the real people come out and talk to you. It's not easy! Not your typical seek and find, you have to do other things as well. Preparing medicine is one task. I haven't gotten that far in the game yet so I can't say much more. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do. Peace, ElizabethTudorRose

In August this year, Philippa Gregory's new novel, 'The White Queen' will be released. Here is a synopsis from Amazon
Product Description The first in a stunning new series, The Cousins War, is set amid the tumult and intrigue of The War of the Roses. Internationally bestselling author Philippa Gregory brings this family drama to colourful life through its women, beginning with the story of Elizabeth Woodville, the White Queen The White Queen tells the story of a common woman who ascends to royalty by virtue of her beauty, a woman who rises to the demands of her position and fights tenaciously for the success of her family, a woman whose two sons become the central figures in a mystery that has confounded historians for centuries: the Princes in the Tower whose fate remains unknown to this day. From her uniquely qualified perspective, Philippa Gregory explores the most famous unsolved mystery, informed by impeccable research and framed by her inimitable storytelling skills. Cant wait for this.

Chances are, i've gotten her name wrong, but i think she's credited, alongside of Linda Porter, as being one of the few authors to favourably approach Mary Tudor. I was wondering if there was anyone who has read her biography on the tragic Queen, and would recommend it, as there doesn't appear to be a lot of information, or ratings, available on the Tudor Books section here?

If y'all can get this book, do it, or at least check it out at the library. I love it. Of course, I like Cromwell and am not a big More fan. So, I would like this book:) But, it is well written and brings Tudor England to vivid life. It's very sympathetic toward Cromwell, but doesn't paint him as a saint...just a man fighting for a better life for himself and his family. It's funny, sad, intriguing, and gives another very different and completely plausible view of what we thought we knew of Cromwell, More, Wolsey, Henry, Anne B, and so many others.
I can't put it down :)

Has anyone read Alison Weir`s new book on Anne Boleyn? I`ve read a few of Alison Weir`s books. In one, she came across as being very biased against Anne Boleyn, and in another, she seemed to pluck a theory out of thin air, that Anne Boleyn was pregnant at the time of her execution. I was just wondering, as I saw The Lady In The Tower in Waterstones yesterday, is it any good? Her books seem to be hit and miss at best.

She`s finally done it, Hilary Mantel has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize for Wolf Hall (I`m sure you`re all aware of the book`s subject matter). Brilliant news, and I`m sorry if its` old news, but I was unaware of it being shortlisted (knew it was longlisted). Mantel so deserves to win this.
Here`s an article about it anyway... http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2009/oct/06/booker-prize-digested-read

I don't think we should be cruel to Philippa Gregory. They both had they're own way of retelling the story of Henry VIII and his six wifes and they both portrayed them excellently. Its the difference between the characters and seeing as no one actually knew Henry VIII or Anne Boleyn, none of us could judge Philippa Gregory because for all we know she could be right or maybe even The Tudors gives the best interpretation of them. I don't think we should pass a judgement without all the facts and I happen to think that Philippa Gregory is a great author.

All though this book is not specifically Tudor it gives an interested insight into the begining of the of the Tudor reign on the French side of things. It is from a citizens view of Paris during these years however you see the reaction and events that happened while the French and English were aligning in marriages that resulted in the birth of Henry VI. How this was celebrated in France. As well it gives a very graphic account of the events and life surrounding Paris in the early 15th century during the 100 years war. It was very eye opening to read about the life of a 15th century Parisien. I highly recommend this book if you are able to find a copy.

We've talked about continuing a series on Edward and Mary;but, what about poor Jane Grey? I know a movie was made years ago,but there is a lot more to the story. The aftermath of Edward's death, the factions against Mary, and Jane herself. Here was another child just like her royal cousins, brought up just like an adult, sheltered,an innocent used by family and friends, brought to a bitter end. There's intrique, romance, murder, what more could anyone want?
