THOMAS CROMWELL;A Man of Letters
b circa 1485 in Putney Walter, his father, was a drunkard and a blacksmith. Thomas escaped home early. He taught himself law, and became fluent in French,Italian, Latin, and Spanish. By 1519,he was married to Elizabeth Wyckes, with a son, Gregory and two daughters. In 1523,he became a member of the English Parliament. However,he lamented in his own words after the Parliament ended:
"I amongist other have indured a Parlyament which contenewid by the space of xvi hole wekes, wher we communyd of warre, pease, stryffe, contencyon, debatt, murmure, grudge, riches, poverte, penwrye, trowth, falshode, justyce, equyte, discayte, oppressyon, magnanymyte, actyvyte, force, attempraunce, treason, murder, felonye, consyle, and also how a commune welth myght be edeffyed and contenewed within our realme. Howbeyt in conclusion we have done as our predecessors have bene wont to doo, that ys to say as well as we myght, and lefte wher we began"
He served his King and country as faithfully as he could. Then hated by the nobility, since he, a commoner had reached so high, he was accused of treasoned, imprisoned in The Tower, and executed thereupon in London on July 28, 1540 by Order of King Henry VIII.
