RE: Henry the Eighth
Jul 10 2008, 8:36 PM EDT I was a big Henry Fan until I saw The Tudors. I read Margaret Georges famous novel, "Henry the Eighth" and enjoyed learning more about him as a very gifted man. I was greatly impressed with his musical talent, his education,, his love of sport, and so many other interests. After reading this I assumed that there are 2 sides to every story, and preoccupied myself with my obsession with Mary Q of Scots. Sorry I know you don't like her. Naturally, I was greatly enthusiastic about the series. That's when my whole world of prejudice changed, and I realized that Henry the Man, was not Henry the King. As he isolates himself further and further from the man by killing those closest to him, Henry the king starts to take over his personality. It's like he was a schizophrenic, and his personality shred in 2. However, had he not been King, I think he would not have suffered what I think is some type of psychic break. The series and JRM really show him gradually becoming less and less human, as he kills his rivals ,friends, and lovers. I think when he lost Thomas More that was a real turning point for him mentally. He just couldn't take in that someone he loved could not do what he wanted. The same for Anne. He says "it's a whole new world." That was Henry the King speaking. I have gotten off the topic. Yes I was a huge fan, but being feminist by nature, I am mortified of the story of these 6 women. They rock. He's just another man who thought with the little head rather than the big. It's a shame he was a king. However, he was a prime factor in motivating our forefathers as they wrote the constitution. They were violently opposed to a monarchy, and their reaction created the most brilliant document ever written. Needless to say, I saw John Adams, and was immediately struck by making the connection from Tudor England to colonial America. Perhaps we will look back on George Bush's legacy, and feel the same.
